Foo - Hey you guitar players...

So I've been playing/creating/writing/recording/etc music in one form or another for my whole life... and I'm sure there's others of you out there that are involved in the same way to some extent... but tonight I had the pleasure of seeing Stanley Jordan live, face to face, for the first time... if you don't know who he is... tisk, tisk... but check him out... truely a talent of our lifetime that shouldn't go unappreciated:

the link is just a sample... unfortunately not tonight's show in philly. It's a sample of him with what I assume is his trio doing stairway to heaven... un-f'n-real. The show I saw tonight was up close and personal, only a few tables from the stage (about 9,000 beers for a warm up for yours truely :) ).... and total solo.. no trio... just the man himself jamming for about 90 min... the tapping master... damn....

i could talk all day about guitars and music! a couple of high school buddies studied at berklee and have jammed with some of the greats. one of the fastest "shredders" i've ever seen live is toshi iseda. that guy is a freak on guitar. say, that reminds me, check out "freak guitar" by mattias eklundh.

Stanley Jordon version was nice. La la la, I found my self smiling and clapping along.

In fairness to the OP, Stanley Jordan is a better guitar player than Jimmy Page (i.e. playing two parts at once) but Jimmy's pain comes through when he plays.

yes, some songs weren't meant to be covered. or, at least, it takes someone or something special to pull it off.

an example, i went to see an srv coverband once. i was ready to stick a nail in my ear. by they time they tried to pull off "riviera paradise" i'd had enough. i walked out.

same with tribute albums. i can't stand the "working man" tribute to rush or the srv tribute album. i gave them away.

by the way, nothing beats the live version of "no quarter."

i used to work 2nd shift. i'd drive about 60 miles in to see my wife (then gf) at about 2 am on friday nights. the live version of that song reminds me of driving 100mph down i-355 with the street lights screaming by.

Yeah, "No Quarter' is one of my favs. I always wanted to play a keyboard when I heard that song.

I saw the first G3 tour years ago (Satch, Johnson, Vai + Stu Hamm on bass)... incredible show.

I play just about every style from classical to death metal, but I destroyed my wrist about 6 months ago in an ATV (quad) crash and it's been a slow recovery due to major nerve damage... plus I can't rotate my wrist to the palm up position fully (supination). Frustrating to say the least... here's some of my gimpy music:

i saw the first tour as well. i got to go to the after-show and meet steve vai.

the best g3 for me was with satch, vai and petrucci. i was fishing in canada when they came to chicago so i flew to reno to see them. i believe it was the first (or one of the first shows of the tour). i got there early and just walked in the auditorium (at a casino). petrucci was warming up. i just walked up to the stage and watched.

on top of all that, i was killing time at the casino while waiting for my ride to the airport. i hit a royal while playing pai gow poker. won $750. more than paid for my w/e trip.

I saw Charlie Hunter a couple weeks ago.. He plays these custom 8 string guitars with the top 3 strings as bass strings and the bottom 5 guitar strings... angled frets... plays bass & guitar parts at the same time.

He's got some mp3's on his site and tons of stuff on archive.org

its an online radio station. you can type an artist or song and it will suggest and play similar music. they've got a fairly large database of not so well known artists. you can create and save your own stations.

i've got a prog rock station, a motown station, a fusion, an instrumental guitar, classic rock, etc. i love it.
