Commuting - 10 years, 10,000 miles

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Warranty:
You will still be able to ride the same bike 10 years from now, while you may not be able to drive your same car after that time.
After 10,000 miles, you will be able to ride much better than you do now. As for driving, well, you may be able to do it as well as you could 10,000 miles ago, but you won't have much to show for it (except maybe a little extra around the waistline.)
If you rated the value of your bike in terms of it's lifespan as compared with a car, since your bike could outlast several cars, a good bike is potentially worth several times the purchase price of an automobile. ;)

What happens if your bike hits 30,000 miles in less that three years?
Chris
ChrisL, you haven't done that have you?

I have to confess my sins. I just can't stop riding this thing when I get some spare time (and when I manage to stop breaking stuff!).
Chris
So you have really ridden 30,000 in 3 years?

Well, if my conversion of km to miles is accurate, I have. I ride over 300km most weeks, which puts me well over 15,000 km p.a. Maybe that's why I keep breaking stuff lately?
Chris
I'll bet it is!!! Geez Chris, I had no idea you biked so much!!! No wonder you love hills, nothing else is a challenge!!! Man I'd love to be in your shoes, except for the broken bike parts....:D
I never noticed before that fubar's current signature ("Why can't I build character...") is based on ChrisL's. Pretty good.
Chris, now I understand why you're so skinny. That's a lot of miles--and even MORE kilometers! :D

With most automobiles, you're guaranteed to be less and less satisfied with the car the longer that you own it. Unless the car is a classic, a car with high miles that is several years old is often regarded as a clunker.
Car owners end up eventually hating their cars. If they would only learn to hate these cars BEFORE committing to purchase them, the car culture would be overthrown.

"Calvin, go do something you hate. Being miserable builds character."
- Calvin parodying his dad in Calvin and Hobbes
(One of the things I miss about the Calvin and Hobbes is the occasional strips done about the dad's bicycling. What other comic strip out played with story ideas involving bike commuting, winter biking, questioning the automobile culture, etc?)
I don't have any children, yet the older I get, the more I find myself turning into Calvin's father.
Calvin and Hobbes is my favorite!!! I hvae one of his books, and no matter how many times I read it I still crack up every time. I think Calvin has had an influence on me though, when I was 13-14 everybody thought I was 17 because I was so serious and mature, now people can't believe it when I tell them I am 17. I had some dude just this weekend tell me he thinks I'm immature because I am homeschooled. Huh, little does he know I read Calvin adn Hobbes.

My favorite line from the movie "Repo Man" (I might be paraphrasing a little, from memory)
"You ever notice, the more people drive, the less intelligent they are?"

I never noticed that when I drove... ;)
