1. does anyone live there and can give me some suggestions and general info in the city?

2. anyone got any cool suggestions on a place to do stuff with?

3. any suggestions on cool stuff to see/do? i may or may not have my bike.

4. are there any places i could stay free if i did some work? or any places to stay? (preferably free)

I don't mean to sound put-offish, but if you are going to do volunteer work, do volunteer work. If you are going to be a tourist, be a tourist. But trying to mix the two will do a disservice to both, and in the places that need the help, being a tourist is decidedly not helpful. Don't get me wrong, I am not denigrating being a tourist in the New Orleans area - I am sure they could use the cash. But trying to use volunteering as a way to get in a cheap vacation sounds like a mistake, at least to me - and I could be wrong.

As for volunteering, try contacting a local Rotary Club to see if they can hook you up. (The Rotary International website can help you locate club contact info in the NO area.) A number of religious organizations also sponsor wook parties in NO. You might also try the Red Cross, especially the Louisiana and NO offices.
