Living Car Free - World Carfree Networks's Conference Coming to Portland in 2008!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

This will be the first time the Towards Carfree Cities conference will be held in the U.S. This is exciting news (http://bikeportland.org/2007/02/25/portland-picked-to-host-world-carfree-conference/#more-3101) for many of us in Portland. I hope many of you can attend - it would be so much fun to meet up and paint the town with chain grease! :D

This is why I posted about it so early - gives folks a chance to think about plans. I would greatly enjoy meeting BF members at something like this. :)

I was lucky enough to go to Bogota last year with Times Up! Anybody going to Turkey this year?

This is great! If all goes according to plan, we'll be moving to Portland in May. Bicycles, coffeehouses, and music: Signs of advanced civilization.

If only Portland didn't rain so much, I'd move there in a heatbeat.

I think that the conference tries to hold itself in cities with progressive transportation policies. Don't hold your breath for NYC.
I'm wondering, if the thing wanted to be in the USA, why not seattle? Isn't the mayor up there doing a really good job with eliminating parking spaces and promoting smart growth? I'm unfamiliar with portland -- anyone want to let me know what good stuff is happening there?

You don't think the New York subways, buses and trains--not to mention high rates of pedestrian/bicycle traffic--qualifies as progressive?

I'm going and well I can't wait. I hope theres a nerdy planner vibe with exceptional, passionate presentations . Tours around the city will be cool as well.

Cool. I hope they do some podcasts.
damn, i wish this was in seattle, but i guess portland won on account of your light-rail system?
we're a bit behind w/ most of our rail system... still in the works.
anyway, this sounds cool - maybe i'll do an unofficial Seattle-to-Portland ride to check it out.

The light-rail, the Freeway Revolt of the 1970's, the urban growth boundary & reduced sprawl, the bike culture (which is a wee bit more cohesive and far less sports-oriented than Seattle's), etc., etc. I also understand that the World Carfree Network wanted to have the conference in a place where there is more government support for reducing the number of cars on the road. They felt that Portland had a better chance than any other American city of seeing ideas generated at the conference turn into reality.
