Cyclocross - Budget cranks

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Anyone ever use a Truvativ or Sugino crank on their cross bike? The Sugino looks nice if you lost the granny ring. The tapered BB isn't as light as on the Truvativ though.

I've got the Truvativ Elita Cross crank on my Raleigh. It's what the bike came with. Is that the one you're talking about?
I have an older Sugino on my commuter, and a XD600 is going on my wife's
new bike. I like the looks, and the value. But if you are doing cross, why not get a cross crank? Check the Sugino website, they make make one.

I didn't realize they a cross specific crank. I was look for something like a 48/36 or 48/34.

I can vouch for the sugino's, I have been riding the XD's for a few seasons now. I am trying a pair of Truvativ Elita Cross's on my Jake eight now.......not bad, but I do not get the flexiability in chain rings I like with the 110 BDC chain rings.

Right now I'm using old Sakae MTB cranks off of an old Bridgstone. The rings are mix and match 48-36-26 from various sources. It all works great.
My fixie has Sakae "Signature" cranks off of an old Univega frame that I paid $20 for and then sold for the same amt (minus the cranks). Also work fine.

Higher end Sugino cranks are great. I've got a mid '90s cold forged Sugino triple on one bike and still going strong.
Not sure what they're making these days. There are more options as to ISIS vs. Shimano vs. external bearings, but they've all got the potential to be better than square tapers if executed properly.
Dimension makes a cross crankset that's really cheap and I've heard a few positive things about them, nothing negative. And sugino xd cranks are nice. They used to have the dimension cranks at aebike for like $30 or something, they're also here but may be cheaper somewhere else:

Also harris has some Bulletproof bmx cranks that I think are rebranded dimension cross cranks for $35. Dimension is like qbp's house brand or something.
