Does anyone know where I can find a rear rack to fit a 1986ish Schwinn Prelude? It seems that there are no standard mounting points for the top of the rack onto the seat post tube or anywhere else. I've seen some older Schwinn racks that have a V-like rack, so I was curious where to get one.

Also, has anyone put fenders on these things? I managed to get a Planet Bike freddy hardcore fender on the front wheel, but the rear is impossible due to the lack of clearance between the tire and brakes.

Thanks.

The older bikes don't typically have upper mount points for racks because... well, they just didn't. :)

You can find suitable fasteners that will allow the use of many racks... One such available item:

http://www.loosescrews.com/index.cgi?d=single&c=Accessories&sc=Rack%20Clamps&tc=&item_id=LS-2621KR&id=77550557023

You may also be able to find something suitable at a hardware store.

There may be a source for racks that don't need an adapter, but honestly I think the P-clamps work better than the way some old racks used to do it... Some of the old ones were as hard on the frames as the kick stand clamps that have damaged chain stays over the years.

I have no helpful experience with fender clearance on that bike, but good luck!

I also want to extend special thanks to East Hill for making sure that more people actually get help instead of falling through the cracks. I have run across several whether I could help or not that she bumps up to increase the odds of getting help.

is the fender clearance an issue JUST at the brakes? My Surly (not in any way Vintage or Clasic) didn't have much room and I needed to modify [read: cut] my fenders to fit near the brakes.
A photo of the problem area(s) would help me.

On my Bridgestone 400, I had to cut a little rectangular window in the crown of my front fender right beneath the caliper to get adequate clearance from the tire.

With the rack, if you run centerpulls, watch that whatever forward mounting hardware you choose doesn't interfere with the straddle cable.
