Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

So what did bike racers argue about before the advent of all the gizmos? No watts to measure, no hrm to look at, heck not even a speedometer or an odometer. Man not even a radio in the ear. Guess they just went out, rode as hard as they could (or needed to) and at the end one guy beat the rest.
Right, but if you check completion times for the grand tours, you may find that they are getting completed faster (depending on the environment), which says that all of these whiz-bang gizmos may be paying dividends.
I think it'd be very interesting to compare like stages from the past to the present.

A few points in reply:
1. You are right they are riding faster.
2. Not sure that makes it any more interesting for the fans.
3. It would be really cool if one could compare great racers from different eras in a quantitative way other than number of races won.

yeah it'd be interesting, but i dont think you could use it to make a decision on who was better. in the end the results are all that matter and the numbers are meaningless. that's what's so great about racing. it's not who's FT is higher, it's who was stronger and the better racer on that given day.
