Foo - I'm a middle of the packer, and proud of it :)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Been riding bikes all my life but never really been competitive in it. My small group of buddies will get a little goofy while we're riding in the dirt and make mini races but never been much of a racer. Would like to have time to ride more and get competitive but I have other sports hobbies that get my competition fix in. Don't really get into big shop rides with the hammerheads either. I like the quietness and solitude of being able to pedal off for a while.
Did the Chilly Hilly ride this Sunday. Left about 730 am. Only saw about 20 riders all morning. Really enjoyed to solitude. Passed a few people and got passed by a few others. Had some nice conversations along the way. About 3/4 of the way through the ride, it really hit me how much I like just cruising around. It kind of made me come to peace with the fact I'll never be the 300 mile a week hammer head who can go out and crush people. Granted, I can crush the wife and nieces and nephews when we're out riding, but I never do  Usually I'm having too much fun goofing off and laughing while we are all out together.
I even put an 11x34 set on the back wheel of the road bike yesterday. Just making it a little more knee friendly. There was some horrified looks on some guys faces when they wheeled the Masi out with that big set on the back and "only" an LX derailler on the back. My knees feel better already.
Moral of the story, something really clicked this weekend on how much I like riding and I quit worrying about how often I'm on the bike or how many miles I've put in. I'll ride when I ride, or the bike will call me on some subconscious level to get out. Can't wait for the weekend now, the dirt is calling.

P.S. Have a Shimano 105 rear derailler and 11x25 (?) rear set if anyone needs one. Make an offer.

P.S.S. BDG and Shadayihs new avatars have completely ruined my work days :D Great looking pictures.

I used to race and do all the hours of hammering that went with it. Then when I didn't have time for that I spent all year every year trying to beat my fastest century times. I got burned out and quit riding all together. Even sold everything. Didn't touch a bike for 5 years. Then a couple of guys at church found out I was an ex avid rider and started asking about bike stuff all the time. I got the itch to ride again and threw together an old MTB with slicks, bull horn bars and a mix of parts. I started joining the local slow-pokes on Saturday mornings. I had the fun I remembered riding to be when I was a kid. It will never be about how fast I can go again. Only how much fun I can have.

This post didn't, but the blown up pic of your new avatar did :D but in a good way.
Well, it's snowing now. Fourth snow of the season which is really odd for us. Global warming my A#$.
Guess I'll be on the mtn bike this weekend unless the bowling tournament comes through. That's the place to get the competition juices flowing like no other. (Geek alert)

Is that 11-25 a freewheel or a cassette?

Just the cassette, derailler and chain. I'll pm you a pick of what I have if you want.
