I just ordered a new pair of power grips.I don't know, ive been using spd system, but it just seems to limit me too much in shoes, with power grips i can wear any shoe i have,i used to use them off road alot, then switched to spd just because everyone else did, they are ok, but i like the grips better,so the new ones should be here in a few days, then i'll put my bear claws back on and where the shoe/boots i want to ,when i want to!

I have been using cheap plastic cages and winter boots for four or five Cleveland winters.
Still have the toes.

I was thinking of getting power grips for my winter fixed bike. I miss the power of the upstroke, especially when I have to climb a steep grade, with paniers full of groceries. How effective are these things?

I used them for several years before i got my spd pedals and they are just as good as any system out there, this is my take on them, i really think you can get out of them faster then clets,i think thats why they started using them for mountain bikes/off road where your reflexes have to be much faster then on the road/hence you have to get out fast..as far as pulling up they actually work a little better i think, your pulling up on more surface of the shoe/boot and both front and back of the pedal. that being said, you can use any shoe/boot you already have,it dosen't lock you in to just one or two shoes, ofcourse the roadies won't see it that way!

Power Grips don't give you the same pedaling efficiency, especially on climbs. They are easier to get out of, but harder to get into. I quit using them once I discovered M324 pedals that have SPD on one side, platform on the other...so if things get sketchy I can just unclip and flip.

Just echoing vger... I think they are great for winter because you can adjust them to the boot. They have worked great for me.

+1
I've used them for many years and am quite satisfied.

I haven't used anything but Power Grips, but these both make sense. Street shoes are looser than bike shoes, so there's some wasted motion. I'm getting better at getting into them without looking. I've almost never had a problem getting out, even in a forgetful panic. I slipped into a snowbank today, and I was able to step out and keep my face dry.

The power grips are pretty sweat but not anywhere near as effecient as my speedplays. I can resize to my normal boot or mega cold boot as conditions demand.
