Living Car Free - No Excuses!

A lot of car-free people out there sometimes have to use motor vehicles for one reason or another. Transporting large appliances, furniture, and livestock is admittedly difficult to do. However, there will be excuses no more. If these people can do it, so can you.

Some of these were very impressive (although the one with the pigs was a bit disturbing). Next time I buy a refrigerator, I'll consider using my bike. Maybe.

I suspect most of those people in the photos do that out of necsessity and probably have no other means of transporting themselves and their goods. I seriously doubt I would get very far with some of those loads pictured before I draw the ire of our local law enforcement, and not to mention my aging body.

A majority of car lite people, will maintain a motor vehicle, in case they need it. However, since they have it, they use it. There are other options though, if you buy a large applicance of piece of furniture, buy from a store that has a delivery service, paying $25 to have your new fridge delivered is a lot cheaper then keeping a car, which can't hold a fridge anyway. Some store delivery services will also take your old appliance, which they either take to a scrap dealer or local recycling depot, there may be a fee for this as well, but at least you don't have to find another way to get rid of it. The other options of course are to rent a car when you need one, or use a car share service. Here you have the advantage of not needing to maintain a car, and you can rent what you need, need to move a fridge, no problem, rent a cube van (looks like a van with a big box on the back). Want to visit cousin Tommy in Notransitville, rent the Prius.

Of course then, there are alternatives, for example take the train, right now, from here in Toronto, I can take the train to Montreal for $59 one way, about $118 return, it's about $84 by bus providing you book 7 days in advance, $181 last minute. Mind you given the options of being on a, stinky, dirty, noisy cramped bus, or a nice, bright, clean, spacious train, is worth the $34 to take the train. It's $239 to fly, plus the cost of getting to/from airports, not to mention, that flying is evil on short haul trips.

Having said that, Via (In Canada) is really starting to play hardball, first they now offer WiFi on some trains, and trains that have baggage cars, have always taken bikes, and they are not always strict about bikes being in boxes/bags. So you can always take the train somewhere and bike back......

If you tried doing some of those load setups on a bike, do you suppose that the fact that we are pedaling would cause problems in regards to side to side weight shifting, or not really?

Don't ask me. I carry my goats in 2-3 pound chunks from the supermarket at the end of the block. :p
