Touring - shipping a bicycle (europe to usa)

is there a way to do this for under 250 euros? ups and fedex are insane. :mad:
i came to germany with no bike. now i have two. im thinking about sending one home with a friend.. but its not an ideal situation.

When I was in europe I looked forever trying to find an inexpensive way to do it. I couldn't find anything. The only thing you can do is put it under the plane with someone else.

i had a frame and fork shipped from scotland to the u.s. about a year ago. it took about three months to receive it because it was sent via economy shipping (seems like it was packed into a cargo container, when the container was filled, it was put on a boat heading across the ocean). i believe it was sent through the u.k.'s royal mail service, and then dropped off to my address in america via usps. cost was around $80US. granted, the package probably only weighed eight or nine pounds (with packing material). as long as you don't need the bike soon, look into a basic service.

how did you find this service? i will actually be ending a summer tour in cardiff, so maybe i could use the same carrier. also did the package get beat up? frame was ok? when coming here, i considered shipping a bike this way.. but my main fear was insurance... im very interested in any details you can offer on your experience doing this!

it worked great, but keep in mind, the frame arrived about three months after it was shipped. very important to consider if you were planning on using the bike shortly after you shipped it. the frame was packed into a sturdy cardboard box which held up very well during shipping. the frame could have been padded a little better, but was still in great condition. can't remember if insurance was included in the price or was extra.

when i purchased the frame, the seller originally quooted me a price of around $200US, but that was for three day shipping from scotland to the u.s. when i mentioned that three day shipping was not necessary, he was very willing to look into more economic solutions (plus i did some internet research to aid him.) overall, a good, economical experience.

wow that sounds great. i really hope i can find a german equivalent (i will go to the post office tomorrow and ask). any other tips from anyone? i would seriosuly start bawling if anything happened to my bikes. ahhh it seems like such a crapshoot regardless of what method i choose!

Hey, the post is old but one possibility is: if you know someone from the US forces in Europe, they can ship items to the US at national rates..
