Adding a plate for a kickstand

Hi,

I am making my 1982 Nishiki International into a commuter/utility bike. I am stripping the frame bare and painting.

I have had an aluminum kick stand on the bike since day one (bought the bike new). I noticed that the bottom of the chain stay (Beween the bottom bracket and the little reinforement tube between the chainstays) where the kick stand is clamped is flattened...I am not sure if it is friction wear or squished.

I am thinking about brazing a plate, with a hole on the bottom of the chain stays to use to attache the kickstand (commuter/utilty has to have kick stand) I have a little Berzomatic O2/Mapp gas rig. I havn't done much brazing, but have done a fair amount of silver soldereing for jewlery, sweat soldering for plumbing, and misc electroncis soldering.

I have a piece of 1/8 in steel bar (type you can get at home depot) I was thinking of using.

Any suggestions, advice, alternatives would be appreciated

Kickstands tend to have a lot of ironmongery in the attatchment. I've thought about integrating the kickstand to a plate on the chainstay that accepts the pivot bolt. You would have to angle the plate to get the stand pivoting in the right plane . You could hook up a spring to another small brazeon on the chainstay. Im sure the whole think would be much lighter.

the ideas is instead of a bolt going through the top and bottom, then clamping to frame, a plate is put at the bottom of the frame and the bolt goes through the plate, clamping the kickstand to the plate, and thereby not wearing out the chainstays.

I just installed the very same kick stand in your link on my Giant Cypress Bike. It's an aluminum frame and it has a small rectangular plate welded across the bottoms of the chain stays in front of the little cross tube. I cut the bolt off to about 3/4" length and didn't use the top part of the kick stand. Just bolted directly to the plate with a regular SAE type washer to keep the nut from digging into the aluminum. Worked perfectly.
