I normally get any work done on my bike at a local shop, and it's EXTREMELY reasonable, but I'd still figure it's more economical to buy a solid book that could teach me to do the repairs myself. Any suggestions?

Park Tool, and they have their website to fill in any holes. That's the first choice.

Yeah, the libraries tend to get annoyed when you bring back the books covered with chain grease...and it's not that expensive to buy one for reference.
