The general session will deal with the issue of trails and
accessibility. It will be presented by Dr. Ronald Eck of West Virginia
University. I (Bill) have attended training by Dr. Eck before on
pedestrian/accessibility issues and have nothing but praise for what was
presented. I believe this is an important issue for the trail community
and I look forward to what Dr. Eck has for us.
The breakout sessions will be:
Sustainable Trail Construction - This session will be taught by Charlie
Dundas and is highly recommended. His work is well known beyond West
Virginia and this is a great chance for him to share his many years of
experience.
Introduction to GIS - GIS holds much promise as a tool for trail
managers in planning and maintenance. DOT staff will instruct the
session attendees in what is possible with GIS and how it applies to
trails.
Rail Trail Right of Way Acquisition - Kelly Pack, a staff member of the
Rails to Trails Conservancy, will instruct session attendees on how to
navigate through the sometimes confusing and intimidating process of
obtaining right of way from railroads for rail trails.
Introduction to Motorized Recreation - Two members of the Hatfield McCoy
Regional Recreation Authority will discuss motorized recreation and how
to begin the process to develop a motorized recreational facility in
your area.
Safe Routes to Schools/SAFETEA - DOT grant staff will discuss the latest
federal program with bicycle/pedestrian elements, the Safe Routes to
Schools Program. SAFETEA and how it varies from TEA-21 will also be
discussed as well how to apply to these programs and application
strategies.
Tourism and Trails - Representatives from the Division of Tourism will
discuss how to promote a trail or a trail system as a tourist asset.
They will also speak about combining with tourist amenities such as
restaurants, bed and breakfasts, etc. with your trail to package an
entire area as a travel destination.
Attached to this E-mail is a brochure/registration form. There will be
no registration fee to attend but all lodging, board and travel expenses
are the responsibility of the individual attendees. Due to a limited
number of openings, we are requiring attendees to register. Instruction
on how to do so are included in the attachment. You will receive a
conformation of your registration.
Canaan Conference Center is going to hold open a number of rooms for
reservation for conference attendees. YOU MUST MAKE YOUR OWN
RESERVATIONS WITH CANAAN CONFERENCE CENTER.
If you have any questions you can E-mail Jim or I or call us at
(304)558-9615 (Bill) or (304)558-9613 (Jim).
