Well guys, I'm headed out to tackle the Southern Tier. I expect to leave San Diego on Tuesday morning (3/6) and plan to arrive in St. Augustine, FL sometime in early to mid May. I'll be doing it totally self-supported, planning to camp most of the time, and do some of my own cooking.
I hope you'll follow along with me at http://www.crazyguyonabike.com/doc/dean It might get a bit lonely out there, so if you're up to it, drop me a line by clicking on the guestbook tab. I'll also try to post here from time to time just to keep you up to date.
See you on the Southern Tier. Dean

Good Luck.
I hope you are better prepared than two gents I met heading out to Texas - one on a Department store Mongoose Mtn bike, pulling a homemade wooden and steel trailer, loaded with a Colemant Stove and a full-size heavy weight tarp, among other things, and the other on a bent, but at least pulling a Bob.
I often wondered just how far they got. They were about 7 miles from home, and were already exhausted! I bet they had a ball.
Anyway, I know you are better prepared, and I will watch your journey with interest.

I'm jealous of your trip. Do you have your route mapped out. Will you be coming close or through the DFW area? Best of luck, ride safe.

Hammer,
Good luck and have a great ride. Although you have planned a solo tour you will find that there are a lot of others on that road with whom you can travel a few miles and share a few stories along the way. Be careful of the shortcut across Louisiana using the train bridge.

Thanks one and all. I appreciate the encouragement and suggestions. My plan is to follow the Adventure Cycling Southern Tier. It goes quite a way south of Dallas, right through Austin and about 50 miles north of Houston, then follows the Gulf coast, usually in about 20-40 miles. I'll be posting snippits of maps as I go. Tomorrow I'm getting a ride from a trucker friend, leaving about 10 A.M., dropping a load off in Barstow Monday morning, then to Long Beach to pick up a machine. From there I will call my cousin in Huntington Beach, stay the night at her place, then she'll drive me down to S.D. for the big send off on Tuesday morning. Thanks again. Dean

I left him a message. He hasn't updated since he started and his mom and dad are worried about him...really...check the messages. If he replies I'll let you know.

I hope he is okay. If he is camping in his tent, he wouldn't have had much opportunity to update his dairy.
