Sad Sad Sad. Just 2 months ago Schwinn announced they stopped making the Phantoms. Now Schwinn/GT is filing chapter 11, and Huffy is bidding for the remains. The last thing I want to see Schwinn Homegrowns and Fastbacks in Walm*rt. Bad enough to see lower level Mongoose there. Murray buying Cannondale? Just goes to show how America loves its bikes. I have noticed a lot more roadies since Armstrong won number 3. I know the joke here in Texas is the number one truck accesory is a gun rack, rather than bike rack. Are we really a dying breed?

Hold the phone on that one! Huffy is on the verge of being outbid by someone called "Pacific Bikes". Apparently there was an article in the Denver Post a couple of years ago and I was directed to it via another forum:

Direct Focus would divide fitness, cycling divisions

By Tom McGhee Denver Post Business Writer

Friday, August 03, 2001 - Direct Focus, a marketer of Nautilus and other fitness equipment, wants to buy Schwinn in a deal that would give it the Boulder-based firm's fitness division and turn over the Schwinn/GT cycling division to a silent partner.

Two other companies - Huffy Corp. and Pacific Cycle - have made offers for Schwinn Bicycle & Fitness Corp.'s bicycle division, but neither is interested in the fitness business.

Direct Focus offered $140 million for the entire company before Schwinn filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month.

Schwinn has said it would sell the profitable fitness division after first unloading the financially troubled bicycle portion of its business.

Hope this helps.

I just bought a Schwinn Fastback...I hope they'll send me some of the new Schwuffy decals so I'm not caught riding 'last year's' bike!

On another forum, h*ffy was declared an obscenity, as was w*lmart. I think the same thing should happen here.

Pacific bicycles is not much better than Huffy. They are another manufacturer of Wal Mart style bikes.

You know Pacific is a cheapo bike manufacturer when you always see them used as food delivery bikes in NYC..... NOT that there is anything wrong with it!!! ;)

The one thing that I get from this is an bad feeling. Is the bike industry in America hurting so bad that one of the longest running bike companies in the world goes belly UP?

My first bike was Schwinn. My favorite local bike shop is schwinn. I don't mind change, but don't want to change to a franchise bike store. I feel funny now though. All this time I adviced people to stay away from dept store bikes. Now a dept store bike company may own my favorite bike company!
