Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - bike pants

I know there is probably a different forum that wuld be more appropriate for "apparel" questions but i need input from the big guys on this so here it is-

i just ordered a Felt Q720 mountain bike and before it gets here i'd like to buy some goodies to make riding it more fun including but not limited to some padded lycra pants. I am 6'2" and currently about 255lbs. i have a 41" waist but i have a huge ghetto butt. i have trouble finding (khaki/denim) pants that fit me well because i need the "butt area" of a 44"+ waisted pair of pants but i only need the waist of a 40 or 42" pair. I am hoping that the lycra is strechy enough that i can just buy the correct waist size and it will stretch where needed. Does anyone in here have a similar situation? found any brands/styles that fit your shape better/worse?

don't worry, i'm planning on wearing looser shorts over the bike shorts becasue i know no one likes to see my butt looking like 15lbs of cottage cheese in a 10 lb bag. i just wanted some shorts that will hold my "stuff" in place and maybe a add some padding back there. (as if i didnt have enough natural padding)

don't be bashful...i had the same concern! and you know what....screw it..
it's funtional! as long as its funtional who cares.. they don't have to look if they don't like it.. your out there pedaling to lose weight not win a modeling contract! lol

short rides i'd think you'd be ok with the shorts and lyrca but longer rides...ditch the loose shorts.. i think you will find that the loose shorts will hike up while riding. i mildly chaffed in a spin class wearing baggy basketball shorts and that made my mind up...just imagine if i was on a longer ride.....NO THANKS!!

I may get flamed for this, but I've never had a problem wearing jeans, even on a couple of metric centuries. The key to comfort that I discovered years ago when riding motorcycles and horses on long rides is boxer briefs (the briefs with the legs). They keep the boys contained and the seams aren't noticable.

right on..but i could NEVER imagine the feeling of being in sweaty jeans...soaked to the bone.. plus the dryout time.. friction.. clingyness after becoming wet..

REI has mountain bike shorts in XXL...they'll fit at least a 44 waist, have a supportive padded liner (like internal road shorts) but an outer layer that looks like ordinary walking-around shorts. The XLs I'm wearing now might be good for you, too. My waist is 39.999999 (down from 45), and they've fine on me. I've worn them or similar shorts for years--I gave up Lycra when I turned 50.

also try aerotech designs ...they make a great product... works well for me... specificlly designed for a clyde

i got a pair of lycra shorts (off brand) from Dicks Sproting Goods today. they fit pretty well. i think i'll order a couple more pairs from bike nashbar and i should be set. Thanks for the help guys!

I just ordered my first pair of bib shorts from Aerotech and after my first ride with them, I really liked them. I am in between sizes and the normal shorts would slide down more than I liked. I have a very flat backside as my wife likes to remind me, so when the shorts fit in the legs and butt, they are rather tight in the waist area. The bib shorts really eliminated that and they were really comfy.

this may be a stupid question, but it would be more stupid if I didn't ask. Are those plain lycra shorts or "compression shorts" (not bike shorts) ok to wear alone, or are they meant as an under layer? I'm getting to the point where I want to say "screw modesty and shame" and I want to ride more and be comfortable. is this acceptable?

the bike shorts have a padded nut recepticle, it makes all the differance

Like my northern friend, I ride in a pair of Aerotech bib shorts. I also have a flat backside (the only thing on me that's flat) but have large thighs. The problem I have with regular shorts is they won't stay up as I have nothing for them to hang on to in the rear.

i'll sell you some butt at $6.99 a lb. i have plenty to spare.

I usually wear a wicking layer under my jeans and it works well for me. Either the boxer brief type or the long john type. I have heavy legs and after I started hiking, they would sweat and get my cotton briefs wet. After ten miles of biking or hiking, the insides of my legs would be raw! Now with the wicking skivvies, problem solved!
