I'm starting to make plans for Bike NY in May. Will be visiting my parents in Bergen County, like have the past few years.
Last year I drove into the city and parked on Riverside Drive near 122nd. That gave me a 10 mile warmup ride before the event. This year I'm thinking about driving to Fort Lee, riding across the GW and getting a 14 mile warmup. Also avoids the bridge toll and the city traffic.
I got two questions:
- Is there any problem or restriction on parking in Fort Lee on Hudson Terrace, especially around 6 am? I've driven down that road several times, but never stopped to read the parking signs. I know that several towns around there have restriction of overnight street parking that they like to enforce in the early hours.
- Does the GW bridge usually open the south path to bikes and pedestrians on time, at 6am as they list on their website? Or do they sometimes forget to unlock the gates until later? I don't want to get stuck on the wrong side of the river and reach the form-up late.

Any info would be appreciated.

I live in Manhatten and like to bike River Road under the palisades, but my wife doesn't like to ride across the bridge. When we drive over we usually just park are car near the hot dog truck on River Road just south of the bridge in Edgewater. Never had a problem there. There is also a large parking lot at Fort Lee Historic park. They do charge a fee in the summer, but when there is no one at the toll booth you can just pull in and park.

I've used the Historic Park for parking while biking into the city before, but never that early. Officially the park doesn't open until 8am. I'm reluctant to leave my car there in case a grumpy museum worker decides to have it towed.
Hot dog stand, eh. How far from the bridge?
Hudson Terrace still looks like a possibility. Just need to know if I'm taking too much of a chance.
Another question is how likely it is my car would be stolen or vandalized.

added- Maybe I should stop in at the Historic Park the day before and ask if it's ok.

The hot dog truck is less than 1/2 mile from the bridge, right at the border of Edgwater and Ft. Lee. Just north of the entrance to Henry Hudson Drive AKA River Road, the park road that runs along the Hudson under the Palisades. You'll see lots of cars parked head in along a small stretch of road near the truck.

Stick a bunch of quarters in a meter on Bridge Plaza south, south of Lemoine, or on Lemoine, south of Bridge Plaza South. I think a quarter is good for an hour. Leave at 6 be back at 4? $2.50. If BNY is on Sunday, meters are free

The bridge usually opens before 6. I haven't had any problems since the south side reopened.

Thanks for the info. Street parking on Lemoine, eh. I remember sitting at the light at Lemoine and Main and counting six banks, one at each corner and then some.
BNY is on Sunday, so free meters is good. I guess the car would be a bit safer if left downtown than up on Hudson Terrace.

I checked the meters on Bridge Plaza South on the ride in. Sundays and Holidays are excluded from meters.
