Classic & Vintage - What to do with Trek 700 Hybrid

I picked up a Trek 700 Multi-Track hybrid today for $20. The condition is poor/fair with lots of rust and it's slightly too small on me. The 700c wide profile rims are in good shape but the 36 spokes are rusted, as well as most other parts. The items in fair shape are:
- frame (horitzontal drops)
- cantalver brakes (could use new shoes)
- water bottle
- rack (seems light)
- trunk (not shown, washed up nice)
- brake levers
- 3x and 6x thumb shifters
- RD
- FD (some surface rust)
- 6 spd shimano freewheel (possibly)

The hubs are rusted, gel seat torn up, cables worn, handlebar surface rust. It had one of the defective kryptonite U locks but without the key I can't get the Kryptonite vendor to replace it.

I'm thinking of cleaning and painting the handlebar for my son's fuji folding bike since he complains the current bar is too low.
It'd might make a good junker for my daughter at school but I'd have to rebuild the wheels (schrader too) - doesn't the cost of spokes add up?

Recently sold this early 90's MultiTrack that is very similar to yours on CL. I had listed it for $125 and let it go for $105. The bike was clean, with fantastic pearl white paint, but it was a large cross frame at 58cm with a 34" standover. Might have kept it if it had fit, and put some road bars and barend shifters on it.

Looks like it would make a good commuter.

I've gotten the bug of fixing this one up - who knew :eek:

It solves the problem of converting my old Raleigh Gran Sport into a fixie / ss. The Raleigh had been the only bike to conveniently fit fenders and the 700 x 35 studded snow tires. The 42 x 16T / 17T gearing I chose, however, would kill me pushing the studded tires. With the lower gearing, fender clearance, and cantilever brakes on the TREK I have a new (snow/ice) winter commuter. [never mind we don't get more than 3 weeks of the stuff] With a change of wheels it'll make a good junker if I have to lock up outside.

One of the guys at work commutes on a Trek Single Track (the mountain bike version of your hybrid, I presume) with 1.5" street slicks.

I'm just about done assembling an old Trek 720 frame into a commuter. I had it powdercoated and added new brakes, fenders, rack etc. There's a picture of the frame in the Boston Powdercoating thread. I probably would have been many dollars ahead just junking the stuff I had and buying a whole bike, but dissasembling and reassembling a bike down to the ball bearing level was practice for working on something nicer.

The wheels are not original to the bike - they're old Wienmanns from another old hybrid and a bike shop. I'd like to get some better wheels, but the prospect of spending another couple hundred dollars doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I'm trying to find some wider-than-normal 36 spoke rims for it, since I weigh over 225.

I'm going to talk to Harris about new wheels this week as well. I'm also 225 plus gear.

Here's a picture of mine. It's mostly assembled but needs lots of fine tuning, like cutting off the excess supports for the fenders. And the starting point.

That bike is brand new compared to most of mine! If you do tear it down send me the chainrings!!!

Amen. I'm 250 or so, and I ride regular wheelsets, including one very narrow set, with no problems. Don't believe the hype.

I ended up putting much too much time cleaning, scraping, polishing, painting, tearing down and reassembling the bike. I ended up picking up a TREK 720 that is about 22" along with a Raleigh Technium. I sold the 700 on Craigslist for $100. With replacement chain and tire; new teflon coated cables, sanding materials and paint the net was $2 / hour plus a rack, trunk, and bottle cage. The new owner is ecstatic with her purchase.
The new TREK needs a good overhaul and cleaning but not as extensive as the 700. The TREK has an old post only suspension seatpost 27.2. I'll need to replace it for the bike to fit. It has 3 x 7 gearing, rack, 700c x 35 wheels, and nice Bontrager tires.

Selling the Technium saddle and frame leaves me with a 700 wheelset, crankset, bottle cage, Cyclone 7000, and TREK 720 for $70 [or less if ebayers bid up the saddle].

What are the wheels on it? I don't think either one of mine is original.
