Southern California - How'd SoCal'ers find out about this/these forums?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'm stealing Gina's idea here!:o ..She said she wondered how a rider like NYgirl found out about these forums. Or what brought her to the SoCal forum? So I'll ask. I myself have suggested to a few riders along the SART to check them out. A few have. Paul (from Herb's and Bloat ride). Sonny who is mostly a lurker and forum rider. Also LewisAClark who I think is mostly a lurker, maybe a couple others.

I found out as I was a regular at another forum. Another rider said I ought to check out bikeforumsdotnet. Wasn't really too interested in dotnet at first untill they opened the SoCal forum. Figured it would give me a chance to meet and ride with other forum riders.

I was a member of the other forum's BJ club too. But that just changed last week as I find it more interesting to compare miles with those that I know and with whom I ride!:D..I have a feeling JP will be asking "where is this club located?"!
How and what brought you here? Especially a NewYork gal living in Vegas riding in SOCal!:p

Fixer posted on another forum about the Bloat ride. I've never really ridden much with groups, but figured I'd check it out.

Now I'm hooked in...

And to answer your question, Fred, I originally logged on Bike Forums (a year or so ago) by accident and hated it (Road Forum guys can be so mean to one another). But I got back on and found So Cal after Vertical Bob talked about it on a ride last year.

since I am "honorary" I hope it's ok to contribute. I joined cycling forums first and ran across this one by accident doing a google search. Started out in 50+ cuz they were nicer than the roadies...then moved to foo and socal.

I had a problem with my bike. Did a google search and found this place.

It happened the same way with most of the other forums i'm active on. Doing research on something and joined up.

I was active off and on in BF Road Cycling and Bike Mechanics for a few years before I noticed the SoCal Forum. This happened to coincide with me wanting to start riding with other people, so things worked out nicely.

Actually I don't find Road Cycling to be unfriendly as long as you don't take the posing and posturing seriously. The only forum I can't abide is A&S.

i'm pretty sure found it while searching the internet for a review of some cycling-related product. that's typically how i end-up running across anything.

as far as the socal forum goes, it was brandy who turned me on to it, and my reaction was kind of like the guy in that bud light commercial where...well, here...watch it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PBceyd8DCpc).

I Googled bike help because I needed some help on on fixing one of my bikes. I got the "Bicycle Mechanincs" subforum. So I registered, started posting. Got too commuting, then switched to SoCal (after someone redirected me)

I googled "Bike forums" when I was looking to pick up a road bike - I usually like to lurk to help answer any questions I may have prior to taking the plunge at something (but I guess I forgot to read up on the marriage/have-a-kid forums - d'oh!), and read a bit on the Road Cycling sub-forum. Came across the SoCal one a little while later . . . and still here.

Well if you must know :) I used the infamous GOOGLE in search of lists of different century rides. I stumbled across this forum and would read some of the comments. I was already familiar with the womens forum but unfortunately it was kinda boring ( sorry ladies ). Especially after reading some of M.E. and Magicant's adventures. However I had spoken to caligurl over in the womens forum so when she busted me lurking over here I had to "fess up" on the lurkers link and the rest in history.
As far as why did I choose the S.Cal ??? I have a home in ontario and vegas. My husband works mostly out there and I work out here in Vegas. But more importantly thats where the best rides are. I have no problem driving to and fro for a good ride and good company. And you guys are hands down ''GREAT COMPANY"

Wanted to start riding a bike to supplement my muay thai training. Googled for some advice on what bike to buy. Stumbled on BF-wandered into socal and on the first group ride of my life was built and given a mountain bike. In the last few months this place has become like a second home. My heavy bag is collecting dust.

I googled "cycling forums" and voila I found this place. I stuck around BF cause it had much, much more info than any of the other forums I looked at.

Brandy told me about it. I was a lurker for a couple of months (and didn't yet have my bike) until B and I started planning the TdSS ride. I think the length of our group ride threads in the roadie forum were record breakers! :p

Indeed! As you can see (http://www.bikeforums.net/forumdisplay.php?f=41&daysprune=-1&order=desc&sort=replycount), TdSS stage 2 has the most posts of all the roadie threads that never had a stickie.

I googled and found bike forums on what must have been the week all the new subforums were created late last year. I found this place and there were all sorts of stories of insane rides up mysterious places with names like GRR and GMR.

Fixer was a regular with our club's Saturday Ride, and I'd see him almost every week at the finish point. Fixer was always so warm and friendly to me, and one day he told me about the bike forums and invited me to check it out and join. So, I did, and found out within minutes what a delicious bunch of nutzoid kooks the Forumites were -- mostly because ME Rider didn't catch on right away that I was a girl, and started flirting with me. Naturally, I wasn't going to back down from a gag that good, so I played along until someone blew my cover. Well, that did it. this was the group for me.

I tried a couple of the ride activities, learned a lot, made some great new friends, and am so thankful to Fixer's hospitable invitation.

I used to post on Bicycling's forums until they've changed their formats and I didnt want to re-register. It happened just about the time I moved out here. I knew about the Bike Forums for a long time, but never bothered to register until I found there were a lot of activities from SoCal folks.

I started when I was looking for tips on bike commuting. When they added the regional forums, I got interested in knowing what other riders are doing in the area. Now I'm sort of a posting lurker, as it appears that I will absolutely never have the time to go on an organized ride. *sniff*

Same here.
I met OC when we were both completing the Grand Tour Highland Double and after the first 60 miles of playing leapfrog we decided to ride to the end together. A few weeks later he invited me to complete what became the Baldy Challenge and we attempted to go to the lifts in 104 degree heat...

Since then BikeForums has been a constant distraction in my life...

I found the forum when trying to find some background info on one of my old roadbikes. A guick Google search brought up the Classic & Vintage forum. Since that forum was so good, I decided to snoop around at the others...

I used to follow a couple of Bicycling magazine forums. When they shut down and redid their forums I did a google and found Bike Forums. That was before the So-Cal sub-forum got started. Followed a few of the threads, then did the TSS. I think a couple of weeks after that is when the So-Cal sub-forum started. There is enough variety here that I really don't go anywhere else, unless I need something specific.

I started lurking here in early 04 and eventually joined up (using my real name like an idiot) in Aug of the same year when I bought my new bike. I had so many questions about the new bikes I was seeing on the SART, so of course I Googled it and found the road forum. Then Caligurl got the Socal forum started (I’m pretty sure it was Cali) and I jumped in right away and only go to the road forum when NOTHING is happening here.

I really don’t care what peoples opinions are on all the usual debates (Campy vs Shimano; carbon vs steel vs Al and is Ovoleg a real person) as I know that my opinion is the right one and you really won’t change my mind. I come here for the ride reports, the banter and to meet and ride with you all!

For me I started in the mtb/bike mechanics forums first (google). Couldn't really handle the mtb because of my lack of skills (scared of falling off a cliff) and so I tried road. Road forum then turned into SoCal-dominant road forum which then got splitted off into this SoCal forum.

I was in the ocean during an ill-advised triathlon when a sudden storm broke and swept me down the coast. I floated in my wetsuit for days, eating seagulls and keeping myself warm (he he) until I washed up on a sandy beach somewhere in northern San Diego county.

As I lay on the beach, I opened my salt-encrusted eyes, and there was Caligurl standing over me.
"Are you okay?" she asked, perched atop her shiny Ruby.
"MMmmsfffgggh" I replied, spitting up day-old kelp.
From behind Caligurl's left shoulder, Brandy chirped, "Let's go for a ride!"
MErider peeked from behind Caligurl's other shoulder and exclaimed "Let's have a party!"

Caligurl shushed them.
"Come join us," she said. "We will ride. We will lay waste to the other Bikejournal clubs."
"But, but..." I tried to explain. "I'm not a real cyclist, I'm a tri geek."
"Matter it does not, " she said. "Feel the SoCal BF Force, for forever will it dominate your destiny, consume you it will."
Thus began my slow descent into the Dark Side.

Here I am. I am here.
