Southern California - Inland Empire Critical Mass - Friday March 9th

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The IE needs it's own Critical Mass!
Our own bike awareness ride for the hell of it!

A nice leisurely ride around town to remind drivers that we have every right to use the streets. A casual ride throughout the cities of the IE to exercise the laws that mandate that the same rules of the road applies to pedal pushers as well as SUVs and monster trucks.

Inaugural ride set for Friday, March 9th at 6pm. All following rides will be the 3rd Friday of the month. Meet location is in front of the REI in Rancho Cucamonga. (We won't actually start riding until 6:30 for you stragglers).

Bring lights (the more, the better), a lock for you bike, a helmet (required if you're under 18), weather appropriate clothing (we ride, rain or shine) and cash for food/coffee after the ride.

Let's see if we can grow this thing and inspire people that bikes are a great way to get around!

Just watchout for the SUV. Everytime I go to the 909, everyone seems to drive those.

That or lifted trucks... *shakes fist* "ADJUST YOUR HEADLAMPS DAMMIT!" They always forget to adjust their headlamps so they're not blinding you from behind... :( Makes me wish my driving lamps were mounted on the back of my car instead.

I might show up depending on if i ride my bike to work or not...

lyeinyoureye , thanks for the info ;)

shakeNbake , yes, it's crazy out here. especially after there's a nascar race, they get all hyped-up. those monster trucks are so illegal, but that's what all the cops and firefighters drive so that won't be changing anytime soon. and to think my brother used to get tickets all the time for having his car too low...

Psydotek, they do that thing with their headlights with the intention of blinding people. the trend now is to have four headlights. i feel much safer riding in LA ;)
hope you can make it. check: http://midnightridazz.com/forums.php?topicId=439&pgnum=1 , for the Badger Song ride next Monday night.

[QUOTE=Psydotek]That or lifted trucks... <snip>QUOTE]

Yeah, and all the selfish bastards with their diesels spewing excessive pollution in to the air. I guess the diesels are everywhere now, they seem to be the cool thing to have in Orange County too. I can't wait until 2008 when GM will no longer be able to sell their ****ty diesels in California.

The problem with the IE, and why a CM ride here will probably never really have the following that it does in larger cities, is the SPRAWL.

Sure, I live in the IE, and would be down for something like that, but I'm in Redlands, the ride is in Rancho. The distance makes attending pretty impractical.

I'd basically have two choices:

1. Drive to Rancho with my bike. Sorry, but I can't think of anything lamer than *driving* to a CM ride.

2. Ride to work. Ride to Rancho, from San Bernardino, after work. Do the ride. Ride home to Redlands. I'm in pretty good shape, and ride quite a bit, so this is not intimidating from a physical point of view, but I'd fear for my safety riding back from Rancho to Redlands after dark. The available routes are pretty sketchy in *daylight*.

OTOH, I've been considering trying to organize something similar out here in Redlands, though I was thinking more along the lines of a Midnight Ridazz vibe than CM.

'Tis true. The "Inland Empire" is a label that covers way too much space. What would be a better name for the area anyway?

But then again, I HAVE driven to Fullerton to be in their monthly CMs for lack of anything else out here.

I think the biggest handicap that an IE CM would have is that anyone driving from the west would be discouraged by rush hour traffic. For me going to Fullerton wasn't too bad, but I can't imagine the reverse drive at that time of day.

If you did have a Ridazz event in Redlands, I'd drive there to be a part of it. Lame or not. :-D

TrevorInSoCal, well, hope you can make. Multi-modal transportation might also be an option. The CM starts and ends early enough that you could maybe take the Metrolink. The last train eastbound out of Rancho leaves around 10pm. It does seem kinda not right to drive to a CM, but then again I've driven all the way to Ventura for a 30 minute cyclocross race so I guess it just depends.

Oh, and we checked out the Santa Monica critical mass last Friday. It was good fun, met a lot of cool people.

don't you tend to see more of those big 909 trucks(the big, lifted F150's with the huge wheels that never go off-road)? i call them "Bruh" trucks, because the dudes who drive them call everyone "Bruh" and look like carey hart.

Yeah, I too have driven all over the place for races, which also seems wrong in its own way, but not quite as wrong as driving to a CM. At least for races I carpool when possible.

In other news, myself and some other guys have been trying to get something like that started in Redlands. Last Friday night was our inaugural ride (I suppose you could call it "Redlands Ridazz", in kind of a midnight ridazz vein.), and nearly 30 people showed up. Pretty good turnout for Redlands.

Hoping to get a similar or better turnout next month. First Friday of the month, 10 p.m. at Stell Coffee & Tea on the corner of Barton Road & Alabama.

what exactly is the purpose of critical mass, anyway?

Mo'Phat

It's for a lot of people to get together in one big group...

to express their individuality.

Just wanted to give this a bump. IE Critical mass is still the 3rd Friday of the month, meeting at REI in Rancho Cucamonga around 7:00-7:30.

I went this past Friday and had a great time. We rode 11 miles at a leisurely pace, stopped for coffee 1/2 way through. All different levels of abilities, nobody was left behind, just a fun group ride. Join us next time!

Hi Jeff:

I live in Claremont too and was thinking of joining the ride next time, probably with my 13 year old son. Maybe we can ride out there together. To REI, we typically take the bike path out to Grove, then Foothill over to Day Creek. The worst part is that narrow S-curve viaduct by the Magic Lantern.

It's still going. We haven't worked real hard at promoting any themed rides lately, so it's been a smaller group (8 - 10 people) of the regulars the past few months. We've had a couple 30+ group rides though. Those were cool.

The Mustache ride, back in November was really well attended. We're thinking of putting together a Lebowski ride, sometime in the not-too-distant future. Come dressed as your favorite lebowski character and be prepared for post-ride bowling...

Mcgyver, my folks will be in town this weekend, so unfortunately I don't think I'll be going this month. However, I would definitely be interested in riding together next month. You might find Arrow (Sixth in Claremont) to be a better route, it's a little less trafficked than Foothill. Take the same path, but cut off at Arrow, go down to Rochester, then up a little to Jack Benny which turns into Day Creek. We rode this home last month around midnight and felt safe.

See you next month, hopefully.
