how do they come off a cottered crank? Do they come off a cottered crank? Can I replace the chainring?

I tried the search option...maybe i missed it.

It all depends on which crankset you have. On many lower-end systems, the outer chainring cannot be removed from the spider. On higher-end systems, the fixing bolt system should be obvious on cursory inspection.

it's a non-bolted (or rivited) Raleigh-type (some are raleigh) from a 3-speed.

the drive side crank arm and chainring look like they are pressed together (single chainring).

On the type of crank you have the crank arm and the chain ring are pressed together, they are not made to come apart, if you need to replace the chainring you have to replace the crank arm as well.... What is wrong with the chain ring you have?

sounds silly, but I have one that looks like the Schwinn Hearts Chainring, but it's off of a cottered crankarm...maybe it wasn't supposed to come off, but it did. I think the origional Schwinn design (for a 1-piece crank) was a skip-tooth, but this one isn't...I'll post a photo after work today or tomorrow.

Short answer: aesthetics
