Dropping by to give a high-five to all you ppl,
spending money to keep this sport alive and well.

Myself, I've done 1,000's of KM ...road biking.

I dislike MTN bikes in the city, yet that's all we're
seeing these days.

As the other said, it's not the quality of the bike that matters,
it's the quality of the rider.

Even with a $100 road bike, it often wasn't difficult to exceed the
performance of other riders, on the local bike path, with their
$1,000 road bikes, spandex attire and shiny shirts.

I plan to upgrade my own bike, of course...it's been a long time
since I've changed vehicle.

Hello from Montreal! I don't care much what other people are riding. What I see most are hybrid bikes, sort of mountain bikes with narrow tire. Road bikes have been coming back in the last few years though. When I bought mine, it was the only bike with drop barsin the store, and it had been sitting there for two years (and got a nice discount :) ), but now I see more of them. Still don't many road bikes at mall stores though.

...ya .... road bikes were the rage, when the baby boomers
were in their 20's, 30's .... but, now in 2003, they've pushing 50 or
55 and higher, and need an old, big seat mountain bike to slowly
get some sunshine while listening to the Grateful Dead in their
ear phones.

By the last few years, I mean about 5 years. Of course, it can't be what it used to be (I was a baby then!). But tell us, what is it that you dislike about mountain bikes in the city? Why should you care?

It's the exact same as seeing JEEPS, and 4 wheel driver
terrain SUV's on a paved street, as smooth as the peel
of an orange.

What's the point ? ... environmental destruction!

Hey Kev,
I went to the website and I agree that some areas should be protected from man made erosion, but I still don't see your point about mountain bikes in the city. I ride one with slicks on for urban riding and switch to knobbies for off-road. I'm not to sure about other people's finances but I can't afford two bikes. I first started riding a road bike back when I lived in Montreal but after a few run-ins with sewer grates and pot holes or just plain cr@@py streets a mountain bike was for me.
