Show 'em off.

I haven't got any, but was thinking about having a front portion of a chainring branded onto the inside of my left leg, mainly outlining the teeth in front. Just wanted to see some of the other things other folks have gotten.

I gots me some tats and a brand. None bicycle specific, and most of the tats I got in prison. If you are considering a brand, get someone who is very very skilled in branding/flesh removal art to do it for you because they can be quite dangerous. I've heard stories of people going into shock because the brand went too deep.

That's enough to put me off it right there  .

There are a lot of tattoo threads around in the different forums, just run a search. We've got some interesting tattoos on the BF members :D .

with all the birth defects in the world today why would anyone
lucky enough to get a good body want to screw it up with
tattoos or piercings??

I can't think of a better way to tell the world you're brain
dead than to have either tattoos or piercings. They are
all about foolish rebellion. They also make it really hard
to get a good job or advance in your job even tho some
will disagree. Ask yourself.....do I want some freakazoid
waiting on myself or my family???

I don't know, I've had the standard one hole in each ear for earrings for um, er, well, longer than I want to admit, and no one's ever looked at me as if I were a rebel...:( . Also, although some may call me stupid, I've never been called 'brain dead' :D .

would teeth knocked loose or scars from a fall/crash count as bike related body mods?

If so, there are a lot of people that would have 'em

Here's one from ax0n on his blog (http://kc-bike.blogspot.com/)after some idiot car pushed him off the road.

A bit narrow minded, yes? If you don't like tattoos or piercings, then don't get any, but why in the world would you judge others because they do?

I only have one tattoo, and it's on my right calf. It's a chainring twisted into a figure eight, with a chain wrapping around the leg. It has a lot of meaning (to me). Make sure it does for you. Are you sure you want it on the left leg?

Well, the proper reply is that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. ;)

I've got enough scars on my butt, left leg, shoulder, hands that I don't need to do anything else elsewhere.

Being a bit judgemental, there, hmm, eric?

S'okay. I've seen the light, and no longer consider pierce ears to be a form of self mutulation, just a matter of style. Not my style, but just style.

+1 Tattoos make one look like their skin is dirty.

Did you ever notice that all the non-conformists look alike? They aren't rebelling as much as they think they are. They are just conforming to a different standard.

Because the whole reason someone would inject ink into their body is so that they get noticed. They want to be judged.

Ah branding isn't all that difficult. I'll give the one huge things to know. On humans don't even think if doing a cattle brand like thing. Very thin pieces of sheet metal and the brand is done in several strikes not just one. (Guess that does mean you need some skill to line up the strikes).

Fakir is the number one expert. Last I heard he is in San Francisco. (Or look up Cleo DuBois, his other half last I heard and easier to find). Or C.M. Hurt in Orange County.

Actually a semi abstract bike brand would be pretty simple to do.

I don't feel that is true. I have tattoos and people can't see them unless I take off my shirt and believe me, it's rare that I don't have a shirt on, even while surfing, I wear a rash shirt. I did not get my tattoos to be noticed.

Bullseye! That's exactly what everyone in the 10,000 year history of tattooing wanted.

I'm kinda the same way. I've got a young wolf on my left shoulder with his head tilted to the side looking sad. It is visible when I wear a tank top, but that is rare. I got it as a reminder. He looks back so I don't have to. He is also a symbol of the strength within that I must learn how to harness. To me, it means something. to others? maybe not.
I have plans for another one and this will be an older, wiser wolf (the pic is in a 1987 National Geographic magazine) stopping to smell some yellow flowers. I will have my artist use a pic that my brother took of one of the first spring flowers from our yard in place of the flowers in the picture. once again, this has meaning for me and will not be visible without a shirt.
and to those who don't approve, I'm happy with what I have, and I am glad/hope you are happy with what you have. I am going into the field of Nursing so I have to be careful with what I do. I think that the marks of my troubled teenage years will be more damning than any tattoo or piercing I could get even if they were visible.

Seriously you have a problem, you want to be noticed. You care how other feel about your body. You have nothing better to do than impress or annoy those poor ignorant people.

People who feel the need to judge others in their own inner or outer expression can rot. It annoys me to hell how judgmental people are (especially of things their lives have obviously not had the chance to encounter) and it really lowers my opinion of them greatly. While slightly hypocritcal, at least I have something remotely substantial to base that judgement on.

I don't think that slaves or people in concentration camps really wanted to be noticed. I would say in that case, the tattoos were to mark people permanently...against their will...

I can't imagine wanting a brand though. I have been burned enough to not want it done on purpose. burns friggin hurt. 3rd drgree ones don't hurt at all till they remove the dead skin (G) even cute nurses can't make them feel much better.

At this point in my life I agree with you. But, having experienced some of the things I have in the past I can argue that your reasons for not wanting a 3rd degree burn are exactly the reason many people do get them. I will not begin to try to explain this, because there is only one way anyone can truly understand and I do not wish that upon anyone.

My right collar bone is about 2" shorter than the left side. It's more aero but, so far, I haven't worked up the nerve to break the left one so that it'll match.

People mark their bodies for a variety of reasons.

Myself, I've got magnets implanted in my fingertips for sensory enhancement (and kinda as an experiment) and I've got a 5'2" tattoo, that is NOT visible (I'm 5'10") I didn't get it to show off and I didn't get it to affect how people look at me. I got it as a reminder to myself.

I didn't get ink to be different, I got it to be me.
I didn't get it to make people look at me, I got it to remind me how to look at people.
I intentionally got big ink because that was what I wanted, because it was symbolic of something that should dominate my life.
I intentionally got ink that is not visible in daily life because it is for me, and not for anyone else.

FWIW, I work with 2 people who both make over $100,000/yr and have visible tattooing.

Bad tattoo's are a horrible thing to do to any body.
Good ink however, can make a good body look even better.

my $0.02

BME had some funny bicycle ink in modblog some time back, but I started paging through and got back to July of 06 before giving up. Maybe I'll hunt it down tomorrow.
