Classic & Vintage - Suntour Command Shifters Installation Questions

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I managed to win some old Suntour 7-speed Command shifters on Ebay however I am not sure how exactly they are supposed to be installed (one of those, D'oh! moments that us old bikers are prone to). These are the shifters with the assymetric "wingnut" (one long and one short side). They also have a mounting bracket that makes them stick out from the brake lever. Two questions:
Which lever is up, the long or the short? (the short seems to make more sense because the long lever would be somewhat of an impaling hazard)
Does the cable exit the front or back? (it looks like the cable could be routed under the bar tape if it exits to the back)
These levers have always interested me and they are going to be installed on my trusty Bianchi Volpe all-arounder bike.
Thanks in advance for any help.

A picture is worth ... I will post a jpg of the original instructions later today. Be patient.
"Which lever is up, the long or the short? "
"Does the cable exit the front or back? "
Mount the rear shifter on the right side of the bars, front shifter on the left, then the cables exit towards the rear of the bike, mostly under the bar tape. I will try to get a good snapshot for you.

Note: Pic below is the 'tower mount' version, you have the later version which mounts a bit closer/inward to the hoods I like the tower mount as I have big hands. Purely a matter of personal preference
