Southern California - REMINDER: Day after Saint Patrick's Day Ride and BBQ 3/18

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Great photos and videos, guys! Thanks for sharing. The BBQ looked great and, Dan, your house (from the shots) does look amazing. Next one. :o :D

Nice of you guys to hold his bike for him. OhNOES, CERVELO DOWN!!! ;)

It's only an aluminum Soloist. At least someone put a nice bench there for me to sit on while making the repair. And Jason did lend me his Road Morph rather than having to use a CO2 cartridge.

Thanks to everyone who came for a great day. It was nice to meet new (to me) SoCal BFers and spend some time off the bikes. Tracie had a wonderful time and was relieved to learn that most of you seemed fairly normal. We should do more of these. Who's next to step up?

Some things I learned that may be useful for organizing a social ride:

1. The length of the ride - 38 with some hills - was good for most people. A flatter ride might have been better, and could have been a bit longer without overwhelming anyone.

2. 19-21 mph is not a good social pace. Throughout the ride we were edging up into that range and dropping people. The call of the road is hard to resist but I should have been more explicit about people watching their speed. Everyone was good about regrouping but it would be better on a "no drop" social ride to not drop people at all.

3. If want an accurate attendance list, ask Tiffanie. She knew much more about who was coming than I did. :p

Sweet! Actual proof that I pulled for all of a few moments! I'm saving this one.

Thanks for sharing the pics/video, Kevin. :)

Pulled? You were off the front of the pack several times!

Define "normal". :D

I don't usually have such a good memory, so let's not designate me as the roster keeper... it'll be safer that way. :p

Good luck...I have found that really hard....
In my case on the couple rides I have organized, I am one of the slowest (I cant drop myself)...so its ok...but it is really hard to hold people back....

Thanks to Dan and Tracy for putting this together. The food was awesome! Next time I'll try to show up in time to actually do the ride ;)

I am so sorry I missed this great ride and BBQ. I want to say thank you anyhow to Dan for inviting me. It looks like everyone had a wonderful time. I was on my way....literally on the 15 when I got the call from my daughters school that she was sick :( . So I had to make a U-turn at the state line. So I apologize again for not making it and also a big apology to Heather since I was her ride to the festivities. My mom was going to stay with her but I felt so bad looking into her little face. Well actually it's not that little she's 12 years old and about 5"11  Next time for sure.

I was thinking of devising a centrifugal clutch mechanism the would disengage the cassette from the hub when hammerheads exceed 18 mph. Call it social engineering. :D

It would have to made of carbon fiber and titanium bits and be very expensive so the OCP crowd would be compelled to install it.

Of course, it would have to be disguised as something else...like "Torque Maximizer 2.0" or "Force Equilizationator Xtreme Ti"...because we all know calling it a speed governor means you sell 0 units.

I hear that Basso used a prototype version of the Force Equilizationator Xtreme Ti to train for his win at the Giro D'Italia in 2006.

Really? Does it come with a carbon friction plate?
