This may be the wrong thread since the demographics for this site suggests there are not alot of mountain bikers with kids.

I love to mountain bike, but with a 19 mos old daughter my husband and I either have to ride the trails alone while the other watches the baby or do road roads pulling her behind us on a pull behind. When we were mountain biking in Boulder, Colorada we saw a guy take his infant on a very, very technical trail with his son in some kind of one wheel pull behind with a roll bar and the kid had a five point harness and of course a helmet. (Found out the guy was an engineer and this was a home made contraption). Has anyone else seen or came up with creative ways to mountain bike with a small child ? (Too small for tandem...yet)

My son just turned 3, and loves to ride with us. I attached a Rhode Gear Taxi, seat to my wife's old mountain bike. It's a GT hardtail, and although a bit on the small side for me, I don't mind since top performance isn't an issue. We have had the seat for about 18 months. We started using it well after he was able to support himself. Initially it was just around the neighborhood, and only on super smooth trails. Now, he loves hitting bumpy sections and going over roots.

He has a blast, constantly chanting, "faster Daddy, faster" or "Again, let's go again". I take him with my wife and I, my Father-in-law (who rides) and my Mother-in-law who watches our son while the rest of us ride. We'll do a hard ride, then come back and do a "family" ride with my son and Mother-in-law. She's kinda our "barometer". If it's too hard for her, then we walk the bike with our son.

BTW, he wears a helmet in the bike seat!
