Southern California - Ojai Valley Century June 2nd (Sat)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I'd consider it, Karen, if I don't do Eastern Sierra. :)

I did this one last year - had a great time (although the climb up from Santa Paula was BRUTALLY hot - I actually ran out of water and had to jump into a fountain in front of a ranch to cool down).
But the support was great - it was my first organized century and they did a fantastic job, I thought.

I'll be doing the Lake Tahoe century ride that weekend.
I have done this ride twice in the past, this will be their 4th year. Most of the ride and areas you ride in are really nice.
The first year we did the double metric. but by the time we got to the lunch stop they were out of food and drink, by the time we got back to Ojai about 3:30. They had already closed everything up. The route from Ventura back through Santa Paula, had you going up & down streets to get the mileage in. It appears this year in their ride description that they will send you south of Ventura on to the coastal plain and then back through Santa Paula.
Last year, their 3rd year, it was better organized, but it was hot. For lunch they had heavy Baja Fresh burritos. All the water they supplied was air temperature around 90-95, except for the last stop in Santa Paula, someone was smart there and took some initiative and bought ice. Pavement temps on the way back up to Ojai was 110-115.
SAG support on the road was virtually non-existant. Even though this is one of the closest century/double metric rides to me, I will not ride this ride again. I can & do ride these roads all the time and there are lots of places to stop for water & nutrition. Their current level of SAG support leaves a lot to be desired. Maybe after a few more years they will earn my trust and dollar. If you wanted to, this would be an easy ride to ride on your own.

Oh, that's right - Lake Tahoe - which I already stated today that I'd really like to do. Of course, they have probably already sold out!

At the time I was so used to just doing solo centuries that I didn't even notice that they didn't have anyone on the road. Just having food & water stops was a big change from my normal routine.

Post on the different forums registration wanted, or check craigslist, etc. you should be able to pick one up. That way I will have someone to ride with, not the slow Team in Training folks.

Well, if there is a GROUP of us wanting to go, perhaps we can start the begging now? I really want to do LT if at all possible, but only if there is a group. I don't want to go up there alone. :o

It's my understanding that this ride has been taken up by new management, and they seem really dedicated to making it a great event. Given the lack of rider participation last year, I think the former organizers did a pretty good job with what they had. It was hot, but you can always stop at any of the fast food places in Summerville, Carpenteria, Ventura or Santa Paula and ice down a drink. You're right, half of one of those barritos was enough to get through the day. It was only the 3rd year though, and I think the new organizers have been made aware of the reservations many, including myself, had about the back street maze in Ventura, and the OnB up Wheeler Cyn., to make miles which are being addressed. I doubt the joint effort of Channel Islands & Kiwanis had as good a Cool Breeze the first few years as they do now either.

Well it looks like we have at least beggars and 1 person with an actual registration :D

You can put a group together to do Tahoe anytime without having to pay $80 for an organized event. There are plenty of places to stop for food and refreshments all the way around the lake. I'd be up for that.

JustMe makes a good point. $80 buys a lot of Gatorade and HoHos.

It's something a few of us have been talking about -- I'm enjoying the bikeforums rides. I really don't need to do a lot of the organized rides -- unless they're a really fun one (like Cool Breeze) or an organized double (where I need the support) or fundraising for a charity, I'd just rather do my own thing with the gang.

I agree actually. And I do intend to plan more rides for sure. But I'm more of a local gal, so rides to SB, down to SD, in the San Gabriels, etc. are going to be the rides I plan. Outside of that, I'm not a good navigator (ask anyone who has ridden with me and had to listen to me apologize for a wrong turn!), and I would be reluctant to organize in a remote area for sure. But one of you BOYS, other than those who have already done so, could step up to the plate and organize the BF SO CAL Lake Tahoe Ride! Anyone? Anyone? :D

Ok so someone needs to take the reins and plan a June "It's Tiff's Birthday So Let's Ride Around Tahoe" ride!!! :D :p (can't be me... I'm horrible at organizing these things :o)
Ok, so it doesn't have to be in June, or for my birthday, but we need to ride there!

Ooo! Ooooo! Me! I'll do it! I already have the route mapped here (http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/20339)
It's less than 100 miles around the lake so I had to add an extra loop in.
Who's up for this?

What? You want a biscuit, little guy? :p No, duh, ANY of us could map it on Bikely. What we need is someone to:
1. Start an interest thread to determine interest
2. Start an actual ride thread with the name of the ride
3. Post who is in and who is a maybe
4. Post all details for the ride including link to route slip
Now, try again...:D

Oh, for cry eye...I didn't even look but I should have known that prankster would do that. Just for that, DAN, you now have been nominated to completely coordinate a bonafide Lake Tahoe ride, complete with hotel suggestions (and best rates negotiated prior to the ride date!) for BF SO CAL. However, I'm not doing the extra loop...you may be going solo on that one. :p ;) :D

Nice add'l loop.:D I have to be up there on some other matters over the next week or so, I'll see what I can find out. I know there is a plan to have a bike path completely around the lake, and that some of it is in place, but I don't know how much. If there is enough interest I might be able to arrange something for lodging.
Why are we hijacking the thread for Ojai Valley? SORRY

Not sure if I'll be up to that much climbing or distance by June, but maybe I'll shoot for the metric.
Some of the comments got me thinking. The only thing you get from the entry fees is a t-shirt and support stops with food, right? There is nothing illegal or wrong about riding through an organized ride if you don't use any of their amenities, provided the course is still open to public use. Just wondering why some of us pay to do these rides, because I'm starting to wonder if I want to anymore.

I pay for the rides in case I eat it... then I know that SOMEONE in a SAG vehicle may pick up my butt and take me to a hospital. I'm paranoid that if I don't pay for the ride, the SAG staff may just leave me for dead. DEAD, I tell you!!! DEAD!
BTW... I'm signed up for Ojai. If figure if I can climb the purple monster in San Diego, then I SHOULD be able to climb to climb the 30 miles at the back end of the Ojai tour...
