Hey everyone,

Yesterday (May 18) was the annual Bloomin' Metric bike ride put on by the Sound Cyclists. The options were 25 miles, 75k and 100k. Since my previous max distance was 22 miles, I didn't want to just do 25, but I surely wasn't ready for 62, so I decided to go for the 75k (46.6 miles). However, I figured if I was going to be that close, I was going to go for 50.

And keep in mind that I'm still on my mtb, though I'm thinking I'm going to buy a Fuji Finest that I can get a great deal on (2003 for $460 instead of $600) next weekend though I'm not sure right now.

Anyways, my father and I arrived at about 7:45 and didn't get riding until around 8:15. Until today, I never realized how good a rider my dad is. I know he's done an incredible amount of rides (across the country, Ireland, France, Italy, England, and Spain among the annual local rides he does), but he was smoking even the arrogant roadies up the hills! Of course, we did ride together but he prides himself in climbing so I really wanted him to go on up the hills without me.

I would say I did pretty well. I averaged 13.8 mph which is not good by any means, but for an mtb and more than doubling my max distance, I think it's acceptable. I did better on the hills than anywhere else and actually managed to pass a decent number heading up.

However, there was one hill that I couldn't make it up on. It was the second steepest on the route and followed the steepest with no downhill. I almost made it up, but I lost my cork right before the top. Maybe next time. However, other than that, I really felt right at home and did find out that I was the youngest rider on either the 75k or 100k rides though there were a few younger on the 25 mile.

Still, it felt pretty accomplishing.

However, I know I'm not going to do 50 again until I buy a road bike, which might be this weekend. The riding position and added weight on the mtb just aren't suited for long distances and after 20ish I started developing back pain and cricks in my neck, which just kept getting bigger as the ride went on.

As for the actual ride, it was a little bit different than I thought it would be (but this was my first organized ride so I really didn't know what to expect), but overall I would say it was pretty well organized though the large turnout proved to be a hassle. I will say that I got more nutrition (and a few other) tschotsky's than ever: Bear Naked Granola, deoderant, 2 razors, a ClifBar, a SoBe, a frisbee, Gu, a tee-shirt, and other things I can't remember right now.

Overall, it was a blast and felt very gratifying hitting 50 miles just six weeks after I bought my new bike. And considering that before then I had never done more than 3 miles on a bike, I think it's quite an accomplishment! Anyways, that's just an overview of my day at the ride.

Awesome! That must have felt like quite an accomplishment!

Sounds like you're getting the road riding bug. It's fun to do both, although mountain biking is really where it's at.:D ;)

Way to go. Pretty soon you'll be knocking out 50 milers like they're nothing. Just wait till you get that Fuji, then you'll be looking for a century to do. :)

Thanks guys! I'm verrrry excited about the Fuji, which just might come next weekend. I'm debating whether or not to sell the Trek at this moment.

Gonesh, I do have the road bug, but mtb's will always have their place. Right now I have two (the 4100 and the more heavy duty Pacific), so even if I sell one of them to buy the Fuji, I'll still have one for my occasional off-road excursion.

Thanks,
Shane

BTW, you can look at some photos here (http://homepage.mac.com/tomhyphen/PhotoAlbum3.html) if you'd like. I am quite a young rider at age 13, but my age is no reflection on my maturity. People have complimented my riding so I hope that one day I'll become a very good rider, and at this rate, who can really tell? a 47-mile increase in distance in 6 weeks isn't bad. But I'm going to stop gloating my mere 50 and leave you guys along.

good going trek, 75 km is quite an accomplishment for a 13-year-old rider. you have a lot to be proud of.

you'll be bitten for sure when you get your road bike... but keep the trek... it's a good, solid bike for off road and just getting around... and it's yours.

ride.

Aw, the darkside littleone. It has been instilled in your father and you shall suffer its curse!!!

You shall be called a "roadie" and suffer much poverty, spending your money on new rides and components......

...you shall forevermore been known as ONE ADDICTED!!!!

Good job, Trek 4100. Doing 50 miles at your age is very impressive. Great photos and captions. Keep riding.

Great accomplishment. As young as you are, you sure have the patient to spend that much time on a bike. :p As a reminder, spin. At your age, you don't want to ruin your knees, yet. :p

To which I say Bull. Averaging 13.8 on a MTB for 50 miles is a fantastic effort! You're going to fly when you get your road bike.

It sounds like your dad has done plenty of miles on a bike - enjoy the miles you get to ride with him.

 - oh wait, you're not of legal drinking age, so pass this one on to pops for spending the day out riding with his son :)

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

BikeInMN, the Aegis is my dad's baby. I've been meaning to add "The Garage" above that list since my dad and I both use the 3rd-car garage as the bike garage.

Zack (which also happens to be my brother's name, even with the rare K), thanks for the compliments on average. I'll pretend like I'm one of those guys and it's just a root beer; my dad can have the real beer ;). And yes, my dad is a very avid biker.

Anyways guys, I have decided to sell the Trek. It's up in the Classified forum; here's (http://bikeforums.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=27555) a direct link to the topic if anyone is interested. Yes, it was, and still is, a wonderful bike, but I have the Pacific for my off-road excursions and if I can sell this bike, it will help me a lot financially when buying the Fuji.

Trek4100,
I knew you were a roadie, I just wish that I had made the same discovery at 13 yrs. instead of 39 yrs. I guess that I am not to old to start a new thing after all. I'm off to take a look at your trek, see ya later. - Ted

Each year on the Ride the Rockies (about 400 miles of Colorado Mountain passes over a week) there are some folks just about your age.

It really puts me in my proper place when some person about 13 or 14 hops on their bike and clobbers me - they peddle without effort and just zoom along.

So, perhaps, someday you may join the Ride the Rockies (talk your dad into it) along with 2,000 other riders, and set some of us folks in our 50's and 60's back on our heels!!

Incidentally, they use all sorts of bikes - mtn, road, cross - even a unicycle and a scooter. I rode it one year on a mtn bike and the next on a road bike. Also, you write extremely well, and I greatly enjoy your posts.

Congratulations and welcome to the road!! You might also want to check out eBay for a good used road bike in your size. For $500 you should be able to move up considerably in choice of ride from the Fuji Finest. Think I have seen a Fuji Roubaix Pro for about that amount. With your dad's help in making a selection you should be able to do really well. Good luck and have fun!!

Looks like we should look for you in the TDF in about 7 or 8 years.
Great job.

Dnvr, my dad has actually done that ride quite a few times. I remember when I was, oh...8 maybe, we flew in to Denver for a week while he rode the Rockies and we just lied low and had some fun. Also, thanks for the words on my words (haha, I'm just quite the little pundit, eh?), I like to pride myself on my writing as both my parents are journalists.

Paramount, I have actually checked on eBay and the last few times I've been there, there were very few road choices, and none my size. Sometimes I worry about eBay too and I think I could trust the people here or on the bike club's website far more than anyone on eBay.

MI_rider, thanks for the sarcastic compliment. I'll be happy if I can ever do the distance of one route in a day over here ;).

Terminator, thanks also for the nice words and for looking at the Trek though I know that was more of a complimentary deed than as a serious look seeing as you already have a good road bike and an mtb, but thanks anyways!

Anyways, I'm just hoping I can find a buyer for this Trek soon because I'll only be able to get the $140 off on the one bike in particular because it was a misshipment and when the newer ones arrive, they'll be the full 600. What I'm thinking of doing though is just buying it soon even if the sale hasn't gone through and then I'll still have the 200 from when the bike is sold, but I'll let you guys know when I get my roadster.

Trek 4100,

It wasn't meant to be sarcastic. Starting at such a young age you can accomplish what ever you set your sights on. If you keep riding you will be able to ride those distances at least several days in a row without any trouble.

Keep riding.
