ive been going to the gym since september/october. in the mean while ive been commuting to work on bike. it looks as though my upper body shoulders down to about 2 inches above my belly button as in shape and slim. in addition my legs from calves up to my hips is in shape and slim. but my middle is jelly! this was not the case before i was going the gym. i was generally just one unison in generally good shape guy. when i started the gym i weighed 182. now i weigh 194.

am i gaining muscle and displacing the fat from my top and bottom into my middle? or am i not doing anything but making my muscle pop through a fat layer? i know i am eating a little more but that is to help build muscle.

suggestions? opinions? actual scientific data?

I'm not completely sure what you meant in your situation. You're saying that you have no body fat except for in your midsection?

There is no possible way to target fat removal save surgery. Men generally carry more of their fat towards the mid section so it's the hardest to get rid of. Do you know your percent body fat? As a general rule, men do not show their "abs" unless they are under 10% body fat.

Aside from having a higher percent body fat than you would like, possibly your posture could be contributing. I've started to notice a trend where people stand in a certain slouch that actually eccentuates how large their bellies are.
