I told NZLcyclist about the article I read in yesterday's Tribune about a cycling "freak" who trains for ultra endurance events. NZLcyclist was good enough to find the link, but you must first go to chicagotribune.com and register, then you can go to this link and read about this truly amazing freak of nature (;)):

It's an incredible article! Give it a read if you can.

Whoops, the name of the story in the Tribune is called "Ultra Cyclist". It's in the "Qualities of Life" section of the Sunday newspaper (5/18/03).

Well, I can't read it unless I register, so that's moot anyways.

Anyone can read it. Just click on register and fill out a few basic questions, then you've got access to the article.

It's probably one of their best articles on cycling I've seen in a long time, and the Tribune tries, believe me. This guy's training schedule is phenominal!

I just finished reading the article... amazing guy!

I have a 200 mile ride coming up this fall, I cant imagine doing 400+ hrs in a single day, or 800+ in 46hrs! *gasp*

I know! I read the article, and I thought, "ouch!". If I did that much riding, I'd probably be infertile!

Maybe they're just very short hours! :D My calculator says they'd have to be 16 2/3 minutes long in order to fit them in one normal 24-hr. day. Either that or it's a very looong day.

Quote from article:
. . . he did a round trip the year before by riding from Los Angeles to New York and back in 24 days, 2 hours, setting a coast-to-coast record for time on the return trip.

???? I can't even fathom where he gets his stamina and willpower. And he rides a single speed? Utterly amazing.

He rides a Fixie!?

Q. What piece of equipment or gear wears out the most?

A. I ride a one-speed bike, so I save a lot of wear on derailleurs. The chain still wears out. They only cost $5 so I put on a new one every 3,000 miles.

He must be changing his chain like every 2 weeks, or even every 10 days, at the rate this guy trains!

I forgot- there's another article for tandem biking in the Tribune too- it's in the same section and it's on the same day. It's called "A Bicyclist Built for Few". It's also an interesting read for those interested in tandem riding with your sig. other.
