Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

First, I want to say hi, and thanks for having so much great info.

OK, well I am a re-noob. I was into bikes big time about 5 years ago, and then because of a bad car crash, I wasn’t able to ride for a while and lost interest, but now I’m back, and man have things changed.

So, I need help choosing components for my project from 5 years ago that I never finished.

It’s a ’97 Klein Adriot with a Manitou SX fork. I am looking to set it up for XC and trails, but I don’t want to spend a fortune. I know that Shimano XTR is good stuff but seems really expensive. What are the alternatives to Shimano?

I really appreciate the help.

Thanks,

Fred

First, welcome to the forums.

For components check out SRAM X.7 and SRAM X.9. I prefer them to Shimano and they are pretty affordable.

You would be srprised how good shimano's entire line had developed. XTR is still on top, but you can get amazing performance out of an LX group (compared to the same stuff 5 years ago).

I've replaced the deraileurs on my 98 Pulse Comp several times a piece. I have LX on the rear right now since it was the only 8 speed available when I went to the shop. It works great, no complaints. In my experience, all you do when you go up from LX is save weight.
