You had to pre-register from 1/1/07-2/28/07, and then on March 5th they had a lottery to see who's in and who is out. The ride only allows a maximum of 2800 riders, there are many more riders than that who want to do this ride and that is why they use this process to determine participants.
This is a great ride in the Sierras about 20 miles south of Lake Tahoe, 129 miles, 5 passes and 15,000+ ft of climbing. For 4 of the passes the roads are closed to traffic. This is the best supported ride I have ever ridden in. They even have SAG support on motorcycles with floor pumps. Truly an awesome and epic ride.
If you want to do the ride and have not registered it is still possible. They allow those who get in and something comes up and they can't do the ride to sell their entries. Also if you show up the night before the ride, they usually release the no-shows for sale. No guarantee, but I've known several riders who were able to ride this way. You cannot pirate this ride, they have a control point about 10 miles in at the bottom of the first pass where the road is closed to vehicles. No bib #, no entry.
129 miles.... 15,000+ feet of gain
Monitor Pass - Elevation 8314'
Ebbetts Pass - Elevation 8730'
Cannon Pass - Elevation 8580'
Looks fun... Now may I ask, why in the world would you want to do this in the middle of July, let alone at all ?
LOL

Actually, when I did it a couple of years ago, the weather in the Sierras at altitude was great, in fact on the top of Ebbets, it was a little cloudy and I was wishing I had my vest and armwarmers.
Actually I endured the uphills, felt great when I made it (gasp) to the top of the passes. But what really made the ride worthwhile were the world class descents in the mountains. I absolutely loved it. It reminded me of skiing in 3 ft of dry powder with no tracks, it felt that good. I don't hoot & holler, but on these descents I was going crazy.

Lots of climbing & lots of miles..... Be sure to book a room ASAP, they fill up quickly.
I know from John's discussions of your riding ability, and I tried to keep up with you last year at Ojai, you will have no problem with the Death Ride. It is tough, just do it at a sustainable pace. If this Clyde can do it, I'm sure you can.

How does the Death Ride compare to Day 1 of Everest Challenge? That's probably the toughest ride I've done on a road bike.
I make it a point not to do rides with "Death", "Agony", or "Horrible" in the name. :)
I did a ride with "Sewer" in the name a couple of years ago.

This is a great ride and much easier than doing doubles. I would like to do it again but didn't register. I will be looking for someone who registered and then changes their mind. Last year a team member got in and didn't want to train for it so I bought his ticket. Please send me a PM if "you" fit that description.

Spooktacular would definitely be a good BF contingent type ride if people were willing. We could all carpool and share rooms and then torture ourselves with either the Haunted or Hideous Hundred rides. They are both pretty nasty, I hear (I've only done the Nightmare Ninety). It's a well supported event (the organizers do an awesome job).
Sorry...I realize that this ride is in October and this is March, but I saw the name and got excited. :D

Hey lady....they were putting away the BBQ when I finished :o Thanks to my husband fooling around - he decided at 8am take apart his bike  and then 90 minutes later we were ready. Then James had a problem with his bike so finally at 10 we were off........He had the whole Hideous mountain to himself by then.

Yes, and with enough persuasion, you too will become part of our cult. We'll wear you down, chisel away at your sanity until you too sleep with your bike and call it lover and stroke its top tube at midnight... Oh, crap! I didn't just admit that, did I? :o

This is a great ride and much easier than doing doubles.
I rode the Markleeville Death Ride in 2005 (yes, all 5 passes) and in my opinion it was much more difficult than any of the CA Triple Crown Doubles I've ridden (22 so far). I agree with scvroadie that the descents were wonderful, but I found the climbs rather tedious. Okay, so I'm not a fast climber . . . but after several hours at 5 and 6 mph I was ready for it to be over.
I was out there for 11 hr. and 45 min. total, and I'm sure it would have been more fun if I were a better climber!
Otherwise, the organization and presentation of the ride, the scenery, the effort of the workers, etc. were all excellent!
Best Regs,

Rick,
You forgot to tell them about the fun part that really put the nail in the coffin that year. THE 20 MPH HEADWINDS FOR THE 3,000 FT OF CLIMBING UP CARSON PASS, THE LAST PASS. And then the 50+ mph descent with the tailwinds.

valleygirl,
I've ridden with you, you will do just fine on this ride. Just remember its the mountains. Mountains create their own weather. When I grew up in Colorado, we use to have a saying. Don't like the weather, wait 10 minutes it will change.
In 2005 there were the headwinds going up Carson, last year it rained at the end. Who knows what the weather will be this year.

That's what makes the Sierra's and the Rockies so awesome, you learn to adapt to the environment and enjoy the beauty.

I'm hoping to ride it. Did it last year for my 1st ride ever and had a blast. This year my wife wanted to ride it so we both signed up. Unfortunately neither of us got selected in the lottery. Since then she got a ticket from her uncle but I'm still SOL. Anybody wanting to sell their ticket? PM if you do. And good luck to everybody else.
