Im constantly switching tires on my Cannondale mountain bike. Trails one day or weekend, back home switching to take the family out for rides. Before calling the lbs - could I score a solid deal online? Ill need the wheels, rotors, and rear cassette. How difficult is it to install the extras to the wheels. Im hoping I can find something affordable, just to have the slicks on to quick swap.

That's kind of like asking how much does a car cost. It depends on what you want. A very good quality set of disk ready wheels, XT hub, Mavic X317 rims runs just over $200, but you might be able to find some less expensive. I don't know how much rotors cost, but cassettes run $40 and up. Remember, if you are running 9 speed, any 9sp Shimano cassette will work fine whether it is called road or mtb. You might check eBay for both wheels and cassettes.

Depends on your brake and the size of the rotor as well. Which brake do you have? Is it mechanical or hydraulic? If you are using say XTR then you must use XTR. Although for $250 and above depending on what wheels you select you could go buy a comfort bike or hybrid for family rides.

I want just an average wheel set. I run avid mechs for brakes. I do like riding the cannnondale, i do have my schwinn voyager but its not as fun when the child bike is attached. Im not saying Im going to go this route, but if I can find something affordable - I might go for it.

Would a wheel set like this work with avid mech brakes?

They will work for the Avids. I just bought a new wheelset also. I used this disc. http://pricepoint.com/product1996.html . The Avid disc is 40 bucks. Also got this SRAM cassette. http://pricepoint.com/product498.html . One thing you might have to do is adjust the position of the brake calipers. The discs probably won't line up exactly the same.

How would the caliper be adjusted. Are you talking about shimming them?

No, the two 5mm allens that mount the whole assembly to the bike. It's a very easy adjustment. I loosen the two allens, then click the inner stationary caliper in all the way, then screw the outer caliper in until it sandwiches the rotor tightley. Then tighten the two allens. Then just back off the inner and outer caliper knobs until they are clear of the rotor.
