Please RSVP here if you plan to ride the March 25, 2007 Breathless Agony Preview. You can find more information and babbling on the original thread. (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=259384)
What: Breathless Agony Preview 112 miles and 12,000 feet of climbing
When: Sunday March 25, 2007
Where: Sylvan Park in Redlands, Ca. (http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?BFCat=&Pyt=Tmap&newFL=Use+Address+Below&addr=600+N.+University&csz=Redlands%2C+CA+92374&Country=us&Get%A0Map=Get+Map)
Time: Meet at 6:00 a.m. and staggered starts (dependent on your anticipated pace) between 6:20 a.m. and 7:30 a.m.
Cost: Free...but please consider donating some gas $$ to our SAG drivers and contributing water and community snacks!!
We are lucky enough to have Mandy providing SAG for us that day! Thank you to Mandy (my58vw) for volunteering...or being coerced...same thing. ;) Without her, this ride would not be possible...please remember that they are your key to hydration and refueling up there on these long, lonely stretches of road and consider kicking in a few dollars to repay her for gas. I'm sure that she would appreciate being fed after we're done riding too. :) Everyone should plan to bring a jug/jugs of water and possibly a community snack to be left in the SAG vehicles. My plan is to make up a bunch of PB&J sandwiches for everyone and bring many bunches of bananas. Anything that you would like to contribute that comes in individual packages that the riders can grab and eat quickly and easily would be great!
We're looking for one more person to provide support and SAG this ride for us. If you know anyone, have them contact me!!!
We're looking forward to a great ride...so please post here if you plan to join us! :)

I wish this ride was on a Saturday, tough to get away on Sundays, still thinking about it, though.
Not trying to be contrary, but this route is doable without SAG, I did it unsupported. There are stores and there is water at the bottom of the big climb. I guess it would be good if someone has a problem, but you can carry everything you need to do the route. Trust me. heh heh

Any ride is doable without sag - look at the people doing those 1200k rides (randiniers (sp)). That said more people can do a ride knowing if there is trouble or they can not quite make it, that there is someone to help them for the rest of the day/ride. Also, being able to have some support back there is great when you get tired late in a ride.
SAG needed? No, SAG Preferable - YES

I figure that if I can handle 15000 feet of gain in 140 miles that the Mulholland Double will be something that can accomplish, and I'll have just completed the Breathless route.... that leaves only Heartbreak as the unknown.
plus if I remember correctly, the plan also includes 10+ hill repeats up Newport Coast and Vista Ridge the following day just to prepare everyone for the experience of the Everest Challenge.
Yippie!

We haven't met, but I know you have done this for BF rides before, and I think it's nice of you to give your time to others like that. It must be fun for you to be there, too. BTW, I had a 1956 VW once, until a friend wrecked it. It had the rear window that was about the size of a football and a wheel for a gas pedal.

I love ovals (1953-1957). I have owned a few in the past. Actually I sold my 1958 in favor or a 1959, mainly to get away from several of the "oval" parts.... :D

This may seem like heresy so some, like a good idea to others but here goes. In an attempt to make it as far as I can up the 4th pass I've checked on a couple of ways to skip part of the 1st pass and ride more or less directly to Beaumont or maybe straight to Oak Glen. Its the ride up the mountain that I'm going out there for and don't want to leave my legs in Jack Rabbit Cyn. Does ayone know what Live Oak is like? Or how San Timiteo is through to Beaumont? I'm going out Saturday to see the races [pro girls] and plan on checking out those road options. I would really love to make it to Onyx. So I'll see you all at 6am Sunday, looking toward an epic day. V.B.

Going out San Tim has almost as much climbing as Jack Rabbit but it is much more gradual so seems much easier. There is often the infamous San Tim breeze that is a headwind...you have been warned! The traffic also gets much better after Redlands Blvd.
You could do Live Oak but be prepared for lots of traffic and bad roads. A slightly better idea if your taking the BA route and want to avoid a little bit of climbing is when everyone else heads down Allesandro after going through Redlands you need to take a left onto Sunset (just past the cemetery). You then follow Sunset to the split at Alta Vista. Head down Alta Vista to the road that parallels 10. Make a right onto that road and head up to Live Oak which becomes Oak Glen Road after you pass over the freeway. Go right on Calemesa then left on Wildwood. Wildwood will take you all the way up to Oak Glen Road. Make a left onto OG and your good to go. Be prepared. The climb up Wildwood is just as hard as Oak Glen with one really steep portion after you pass the park on your right.

Sunset is a beautiful area as a bypass. I agree with the traffic in the area.

ok just some things that need to be pointed out.
1. San timoteo has just been repaved most of the way.
2. up on the 38 just after leaving the ranger station there is a sketchy bridge with some BIG construction. NOT safe for cars to pass you so i'd just call the lane, the WHOLE lane There's concrete on both sides of you so don't be a pansy take the whole thing or they try to pinch you. Better if you have more people. Keep an eye out behind you and wave your arms around or something. luckily it's really quite short, but the pavement is sketchy and there are some BIG grooves.

If we are a group at that point there should be no issues with cars - I take the whole bridge and hold up cars, same goes for other sketchy parts. I will need to see a route slip so I can drive some of the major areas before and look at hazards...

Brandy, my friend Sarah has said she wants to do this ride. She is plenty strong and had no trouble with it last year. I will try to get phone# and info from her, if I don't can she give it to you at the start? She sometimes doesn't check her e-mail for a few days.

I figure I'll have about 9-10hr of light to complete the ride. I'll need at least 12.5mph to complete the ride under those times. I should be OK though my geared bike doesn't have a computer on it
