I am a displaced Canadian now living in Cincinnati OH and am planning my first big bike trip for this summer. I plan to ride from Cincinnati to Coldwater north of Barrie. THe whole trip is about 550 miles (ok about 900km). I have the route from Cinci to Port Huron/Sarnia pretty much mapped out but have not yet tackled the Ontario portion. I bought the Backwoods Detail maps and now have to go thru it. But anyone have a route already prepared that they would be willing to share? I hope to do the tour in about 8 or 9 days - so about 100kms per day. I've never tried anything so ambitious but you only live once right!. My wife and I did a support ride in California but we never topped 55kms in a day and I was pretty tired but day 5. But I have been training indoors on a trainer and overall fitness training. I plan to do some long rides - in the 100km range in the coming weeks (assuming the weather holds) to guage my overall conditioning. Any perspective or help appreciated!

thanks

rick

Try mapquest. Take a look at google earth while you map your route. You can have a look at the roads you will be on.
Are you from Coldwater? I used to go fishing in the Coldwater river. Stayed at Matchedash Camp in Fesserton.

Try to avoid the Hockley Valley area. There are some killer hills!

One tip: neither the bridges and tunnel at Detroit and Port Huron are accessible to cyclists. However, there are two ferries that you can use:
– Algonac - Walpole Island
– Marine City - Sombra

From memory, both ferries have a web page, so you should be able to find more information about them.

Sounds like an awsome trip Rick! Check the maps out from this site: http://www.advermap.com/ Map 1-3 will get you from Sarnia and points northwest, while map 2 will get you up to Barrie. The maps are very good and have lots of usefull routes. Alphonso is bang on about the hockley valley area...but hey, that could be a lot of fun. Some pretty roads and nice views. I love riding down the Forks of the Credit River road.
