Road Cycling - Your Gruppo

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I just wanted to know what gruppo's you guys are using...
I'm using a 105 gruppo..
Why?
I can't afford the high end shimanos.
Unfair poll, no place for Campy Super Record, or Nuovo Record. Sorry Marty, there is a limit of 10 options on our Poll.:crash: :D
By the way, you can select more than one option in the poll(if you have several bikes with different groups).
I will be using Ultegra...if my bike ever gets here (ETA is Friday). ;)

I only have one bike with an unmixed group, and that's the Fuji with 105. You do get a lot of bang for the buck with 105, no doubt about it.
My other bikes have road/MTB mixes, with Ultegra/XT/XTR on one and Sora/Tiagra/LX on the other. So they didn't get to vote.

I'm using Chorus for my daily rider and
N. Record on my vintage trek.

"Record" equipped with C Record group, on my fixie I run 105 170/44t cranks with 16t Surly track cog in the back on Suzue hubs
Hmmm. I have two bikes but only get one vote?
I voted Ultegra. That's what I have on my road bike.
My commuter has 105. As Rich said, "You do get a lot of bang for the buck with 105, no doubt about it."

2 Bikes here in the UK, both running Sora. One has STI shifters, the other downtube levers. One day I'll test ride a more expensive group and decide that I need a change. Thing is, the last bike I had was a 10 speed, and I couldn't believe it when "lower level" road bikes suddenly had 16 speeds. That's progress! It runs, shifts and wears well.
Cheers,
Ed
Interesting the way the poll curve increases toward Ultegra.
Seems to be the most used gruppo around. And rightly so. Loads of value in those parts
Ultegra is supposed to be a biword for reliability...So says Cyclesport.

I am currently using rsx shifters & der. 105 brakes, sampson crankset, rolf vector comp wheelset, look carbon fork ,carbon seatpost, icon stem, modolo bars, gommitalia tires on a lemond steel frame. It kinda sounds like a frankenbike but actually is pretty nice looking & functioning setup.

Shimano Exage 6 speed downtubes on my ancient Centurion.. I will throw Ultegra on my new Lemond, if I can ever save the money for the components !
Campy Record (Racing-T cranks & r. der., Ergo Record brifters) w/DA front derailleur on the road bike. On the 'cross bike I've got Campy Racing-T cranks & derailleurs, Shimano bar-end shifters, and Shimano brake levers w/ Avid Shorty canti's.
The DA fr. der. was ported over from an earlier frame and it works fine w/ the Campy triple.
And I've stashed away my early 80's Campy NR stuff for when I rebuild the Romani as my retro ride.

Shimano 600/Ultegra mix on my Concorde.
Campagnolo Record on the on my C40.
Record 8 drivetrain and Chorus brakes/headset on my Colnago.
Super Record on my retro Basso
Mirage on my '99 Univega (great bike for $ paid btw)

Moved the '00 Campy Record 10-speed from my '87 Paramount to my '02 Scapin. Now have to find a period C Record group for my Paramount. Can I live without Ergo levers on same? Somehow I think not.

I am building another road bike, and I am starting to save for a Campy Record,
although I have nothing against Dura Ace, I want to expirience the Exotic Campy in my Exotic New Bike "Pinarello Prince"
I picked Dura-Ace since [1] this is a road bike forum and [2] my road bike has more Dura-Ace parts concentration than from any other brand. However, I mix it up a bit.
So here's the breakdown... or you could just click on my bike link in my .signature ;)
I'll try and list things that typically make up a grouppo.
-- Shimano Dura-Ace BB, brakes, brifters, front der., rear der., cassette, computer
-- FSA Carbon Pro crankarms and chainrings
-- SRAM chain
-- Mavic Ksyrium SSC wheelset... so Mavic hubs and skewers
-- Chris King headset
-- Easton seatpost
-- ITM stem
-- Speedplay Zero pedals
I think that covers what normally goes into a grouppo. I really like the smoothness of Shimano's shifting but I'm quite tempted to switch over to Campy for my next big upgrade. Maybe I'll be brave and give the electro-Campy a try a year or so after it comes out. Okay... so I'm not brave enough to go for the 1.0 release. :D
My MTB is primarily Shimano XTR (not the new one) but has also mixed components.
Full 105 with Ultegra derailleurs and crank

My road bike has almost a full C Record gruppo from the mid-80s save the front der. (Sach-Huret) and brake levers (Suntour Superbe).

Are these Erickson as in Gleen Erickson from Seattle ?

a lot of people are "leaning" toward ultagra because that's the group that comes with most reasonably affordable performance road bikes in the us. period. shimano has about two-thirds of the market, so that's what people buy. it doesn't mean it's necessarily the best, just the most prevalent.
ultegra is also a damned fine group, and a worthy upgrade to 105 if you can afford it. it is no better nor worse than the campagnolo groups [i'd say it lines up with centaur], and is fully raceable, without being the top of the top like dura ace.

Wow!
All Ultegra .. I'm happy with the performance, and it's cheaper than DA or Compag high-end stuff.
Will try out Compag Record at some stage to see if the hype is worth melting the credit card.
