I recently bought an Shimano XTR to replace my old Shimano Ultegra600 hubs.

I was suppose to buy Shimano 105 hubs and cogs but ended up with the XTR. It looks better, and the quality is outstanding! I swapped the XTR cogs with Shimano105 cogs.

I already bought the hubs, but still have to build the wheel. How do you think it would perform? Better than the 105 I pressume.

the problem you're going to have is that your road bike -- if it's a standard road bike -- has rear dropout spacing of 130 mm, while the xtr hub is built for 135 mm spacing. that means that the rear hub will be too wide to fit your frame. if your frame is metal, you can have it professionally widened, but that would mean using mtb hubs forever.

if your frame is steel or cro-mo alloy then you can spring the rear triangle to fit the hub without any worries....if its aluminum dont try it...i dunno what to do if its titanium though....

just remove the 5mm spacer on the XTR hub from the cone lock/nut/spacer assembly

May have to redish the wheels if you do that..

If you want to use a 130mm dropout spacing, you need a shorter axle. The XTR is a fancy Al one. Can you get a shorter replacement ?

i forgot to mention that i had built frame to those specifications..

I have custom built the frame to fit. So no worries here on the 5mm difference... Use MTB hubs forever? I think the XTR hubs will last for several years...

Had been using Shimano600/utlegra hubs for more than 10yrs on my other bike, and is still running by the way. Good maintenance is the key to lasting machines.
