Touring - Tubus Tara on Surly 1x1 fork?

I'm wondering if anyone has any experience mounting a front rack on a Surly 1x1 fork. I'd like to get a Tubus Tara rack, but I'm not sure if it will fit well. The outside of the fork leg is about 3/4" wider than the lower eyelet and due to the shape of the Tara, I'm afraid I'll have to use spacers and a long bolt to attach it to the eyelets. Here's a couple pics to help illustrate what I'm saying:

(my fork doesn't have the disc brake attachment). See how the Tara will cross right over the thick part of the fork leg?

If anyone has paired up this fork and rack, please let me know how it is working. Otherwise I'm leaning towards getting the Jandd Extreme rack. I kinda like the top shelf option and the lower mount point looks perfect, but I don't see a clean way to mount the lower fender attachment points to the rack like the Tara provides (and this rack weighs twice as much as the Tara!):

I'm open to suggestions if anyone knows of another rack that would work well. I'm riding to Alaska and will hit some gravel roads, but don't expect to be on singletrack or rough off-road conditions. I'd like something sorta beefy, but the Surly Nice Rack might be overkill. Thanks!

Seems like you should be able to bend the rack in without any problems. Granted, I don't have the Surly fork. I had to bend mine a bit to get it to fit. It had a little give so I wasn't too worried. So, you're going to need an adapter for the fork to mount the Tara, which might push the arms of the rack out a little, depending on what sort of adapter you use. It's solid now. I had do use one for my bike:

Von Zipper, thanks for the pic. That Surly fork of mine is FAT and doesn't taper at all like yours does. I'm afraid it will take significant spacers which means the bottom of the rack will be about an inch out from the bottom of the fork. I'd be afraid to put much weight on that sort of arrangement. That's a lot of torque on that bottom bolt.

Also, I copied that gear list you posted previously and used it as a starting point for my own gear list. Hope you don't mind!:)

You could put a lht 26" fork on your 1x1 for about $70. You'll lose a little tire clearance and ~25mm a-c distance.

Thanks for the suggestion, but my frame is not a 1x1, just the fork is. I bought the 1x1 fork to replace the (very) old suspension fork on my hardtail mtn bike frame. I went with the 1x1 fork since it is suspension corrected and the LHT fork isn't. I didn't want to mess up the bike handling/geometry.

It's a lovely rack (I have it) but i don't know that it would solve your mounting/attachment problems. I also doubt you could bend it if it was too narrow to fit around your forks.

Ah, you're asking really good questions velo2000-- I'm sure your going to find the right rack, so don't worry.

Sometimes its best to just head down to the bike shop and let the pros have a go at it. This is one of those times, I think. Yeah, you'll spend more money, but you'll also ride out of the shop with your rack mounted right.
