"Spectacular", in this context, means that the action was straight out of a Road Runner cartoon. I was happily zooming through 30 cm of swirling, fresh powder down the south face of Mont Tremblant, a ski resort north of Quebec, on my way to the TGV chair, getting in one last run before meeting my friends and family for lunch. As I started down the last steep pitch, I encountered heavy, damp, churned-up snow and caught an edge while turning. I began doing a series of cartwheels, shedding equipment as I went along.
On the last cartwheel, my right binding (undoubtedly with "ACME" stamped on it somewhere) released with a sound like a gun going off (BANG!) and I flew up in the air for one last manuver before landing hard, on my knee, on concrete-like ice. It was perfect Wile E. Coyote, right down to the little midair pause on the last bit.
Since this was a Road Runner cartoon, I quickly got to my feet, collected my stuff, and resumed skiing down the mountain. I rode the TGV lift back to the top and stopped off for lunch. When I got up again, I found I could barely walk. Disappointed that we were no longer following a Road Runner script, I rode the gondola to the base and hobbled back to the lodge.
There's a small fracture below the knee, but it will heal without surgery or a cast. I'm now wearing a removable splint, and can perform most normal activities as long as I use a bit of creativity. The biggest downside so far (and it is a real downer) is that I now have to drive to work instead of riding my bike. It feels very strange to do this. Worst of all, I'm now suffering from bike withdrawal. On the other hand, it is kind of interesting to work on using my crutches most effectively.
