BMX - at work...

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I worked at NAPA up until a while ago, then I quit because the pay sucked, the work sucked and the management sucked.

+1 on all that
BUT it pays the bills
Once the Shop gets going, I hope to quit (but having medical insurance is nice)

Word. Medical insurance has kept my family out of the slumbs. Breaking a leg + surgery + many doctors appointments + physical therapy twice a week for a few months = a large sack of money

We don't have health insurance, I'd be screwed if I broke anything that bad.
And it's spelled semen.

Or just work for a local bike shop and get good parts cheap.

I was going to say that. I like all my LBS's and hope to work for them when im 16.

The local bike shop around me sucks and is run by old people. The not so local one isn't much better, and is wayyyy overpriced. $50 for unsealed, non-magnesium, jimmy c's.
you should ask them to start matching dans/albes/empire/staff

Not really, they wouldn't do it. They would probably lose money, as they can't afford to sell products for 30-40% less.
why not, other companies do just fine
FitRider 921

Other companies probably get better prices from their distributors, hence why they can sell parts for so much less.

They have to stay in business, so they have to mark stuff up. Our mark-up on USB cables is about 90 percent, which compensates for the fact that we have to sell the printers pretty close to what they cost.
I'm thinking about seeing if my bike shop has a job open, although I'd probably make even less I think I would enjoy it more, and I like working for small shops a lot more than retail stores.

Be an ump. I'm thinking about starting i hear it's decent money. I can't play anymore because of my elbow but that's another story.

Yeah, being an ump makes good money ($25 for about a 2-hour game if you do home plate), although it can be a pain in the ass. I was the top-rated umpire in the league last year... I should probably do it again this year... but I need to be able to run.

Word.
I would never ump behind the plate though just because whenever i got mad at a call my catched would conveintly miss the ball and hit the ump. Only if no one was on base though :D .
I miss baseball.

Rugby>all.
Oh how I loved being the person that everybody feared when it came to the tackling drills, and being able to take on half of a scrum. Plus, I loved going into rucks as fast as I could.

There's quite a few threads in the Bicycle Mechanics forum that deal with that aspect (and of course, you are probably privy to the 'closed to the public' Mechanics forum. I think that almost everyone agrees that you will not get rich by any means working for a bike shop, but it's certainly something that would sharpen your wrenching skills, and in a small shop, it would sharpen your interpersonal relationship skills (as in, keeping the customer happy).
However, it's not going to get you access to health insurance unless you have a very generous employer...as you get older you discover that that's one of the most important benefits you can get. Unless you live in Canada or the UK :p .

Haha still. I wouldn't want to get the wrath of a foul tip. Or the catcher messing up. I'd go with like any of the other ump positions though.
I'd much rather be playing though. Oh well. :(

Yeah, foul tips and straight pitches missed really hurt... even if you get hit somewhere that is protected. It would be really bad if I got hit with a foul tip in my bad leg.

Ok, here we go, we got a real pressure cooker
going here, two down, nobody on, no score,
bottom of the ninth, there's the wind-up and
there it is, a line shot up the middle, look
at him go. This boy can really fly!
He's rounding first and really turning it on
now, he's not letting up at all, he's gonna
try for second; the ball is bobbled out in center,
and here comes the throw, and what a throw!
He's gonna slide in head first, here he comes, he's out!
No, wait, safe--safe at second base, this kid really
makes things happen out there.
Batter steps up to the plate, here's the pitch--
he's going, and what a jump he's got, he's trying
for third, here's the throw, it's in the dirt--
safe at third! Holy cow, stolen base!
He's taking a pretty big lead out there, almost
daring him to try and pick him off. The pitcher
glance over, winds up, and it's bunted, bunted
down the third base line, the suicide squeeze in on!
Here he comes, squeeze play, it's gonna be close,
here's the throw, there's the play at the plate,
holy cow, I think he's gonna make it!
