More important than a mirror, I think, is to develop the habit to always, without exception (which is easy to accomplish once you have developed the habit), look back over your shoulder at any approach to any intersection, even if you're going straight.
Thanks for the suggestion. I will try that as corrective action number 4. Good luck. It might feel funny at first because you're not used to doing it. And you have to remind yourself to do it each time.

You'll know it's a habit when you try to get yourself to not look back as you approach an intersection, and that feels odd.

I'll venture this much, whining and complaining my not contribute much to my safety, but it was satisfying, and calming, to be able to whine and complain to people who, at the very least, understand why I felt shaken up.

I understand, just don't expect Mr. Motorist to understand :)

Of course not, he's whining and complaining about me to the Automobile Forum right now!

That would be too good to be true! No, Speedo is a longish story, but the crux of it is that I'm a middle aged guy who is unashamed to wear racing style bathing suits. :)

Do you take total responsibility for your safety when cycling in traffic, or do you hold others at least partially responsible?

I do everything in power to be as safe as possible and obeying traffic laws. But as bicyclists, we are kind of at the mercy of motorized traffic also. The best way to get respect from motorized traffic is to earn it. Sad to say, for 99 of us that do just that, there a few who disobey all traffic laws and flip middle fingers at almost anything. It's those few that make it harder for the majority of us who do ride properly.

Ewww. That's just gross.

Unfortunately it's just about right, minus the straps and the moustache. And I prefer blues to greens. And as a slightly retro guy, I have Rayban Wafarers.

Self confidence isn't always pretty.

When I was in Australia, I snapped a telephoto shot of a sixtyish guy with a huge gut wearing a speedo. That guy is my hero.
