Foo - Everyone should drive one of these.

Video of the Bugatti Veyron reaching 253 mph on a five mile straightaway at Volkswagon's test track. If you have a million dollars, you too could own this 1001 horsepower beast.

But if everyone drove one of these what would be special about it.

An interesting subject, but what an irritating video! Obviously directed by someone steeped in the new, cool, lurch-cam, no-shot-longer-than-1.5secs. let's-make-the-viewers-sea-sick, school of cinematography. The commentator sounds like a bit of a wănker…

Good on a drag strip. :D
I wonder if Yakima has a fit kit for that one. Awesome car, thanks for that Jakey. Monster Cookie coming up, eh?

Someone posted a thread exactly like this a week or two ago.
That's a clip from Top Gear, one of my favorite TV shows ever.
Where I live and all the drunk drivers, I wouldn't want to put something on the road more than $50,000 much less 1.6 million...

If everyone drove one of these, (1) the number of drivers would drop by about 50% pretty much overnight and (2) the surviviors would have a whole new collection of modern sculptures wrapped around trees, telephone poles, etc., to look at along the roads.
And what is with calling it a byoo-GAT-tee (with the "gat" rhyming with "cat")? Is this from the same pronunciation twits who came up with JAG-yoo-war ("war" rhyming with "car")?

I had to rewind and hear that again. Damn, that is a HEAVY car!! Oh, I see....they were talking about the cost in Europe.:o

Damn, that is a HEAVY car!!
It's powered by a very small quantum singularity. They don't tell you that none of the roads in Europe are rated for that weight so you can only drive it on the solid synthetic diamond race track... on the moon.

If everyone drove one of these, (1) the number of drivers would drop by about 50% pretty much overnight and (2) the surviviors would have a whole new collection of modern sculptures wrapped around trees, telephone poles, etc., to look at along the roads.Except that only 3% of traffic-fatalities occur on the freeway where speed is even a factor in accidents. Even if you double the numbers of people killed by speeding on the freeway, it would only increase total fatilities by +3%. On the other hand, the majority of fatalities (75%) occur at intersections below the speed-limit...
I must say the Bugatti looks nicer in person than in pictures/videos. For a while, there were two of them parked side by side at the dealership in La Jolla. Anyway, I don't really dig it, though it's not as if I could afford it anyway. For a big luxury exotic coupe, the new Maserati Gran Turismo is more to my taste. (Not that I can afford that one, either.)
As for speed and safety, I don't see a problem. We already drive cars that are more than capable of going fast enough to kill us. An even faster car doesn't change that.

Top Gear tends to try for dramatic effect a lot of times. The show isn't really meant to be loaded with interesting info as much as entertaining. For example, last night I watched their review of the Ariel Atom (open wheel, open cockpit). I swear the guy drove it with no helmet just so we could watch his face flap in the 130 mph breeze.
I'm a little impressed how calm he seems to be at 250 mph. If it were me I'd be so focused on keeping the steering dead straight I wouldn't be saying a word. If I remember right, when VW first tested the car, they lost control at around 230 mph and had to modify the aerodynamics to keep it on the ground to hit that 253 mph record.
I saw a Lamborghini today on the road. I think it was a Gallardo. Looked pretty sweet.

97 percent of the American driving population can't handle anything more exciting than an AMC Pacer. I've got enough immortal teenagers doing wheelies in the breakdown lanes on superbikes thank you. No Veyrons in NJ please.

I find it a bit amusing that supercars are basically airplanes with the wings on upside down :p
Yeah, the Top Gear folks are pretty steely nerved as far as speed is concerned. I think after driving so many fast as hell cars, you start to get used to it to some extent.

No reason to doubt your numbers, Danno. But considering the inability of so many drivers to adequately control the mundane cars they drive now, I can just imagine the carnage when Maudie Frickert gets behind the wheel of her new moon-rocket on wheels and hits the gas pedal. Based on the nincompoops we have all seen, I predict that a shocking number wouldn't be able to back out of their driveways without generating a police report that reads a lot like the urban legend car-with-a-JATO-attachment tale that scored the first ever Darwin Award of the Year.

Yeah, unfortunately with the advances in safety features like airbags, crumple-zones, ABS and stability-control, we aren't removing as many idiots from the genepool as necessary... :(
...and if we all had one, we'd all be stuck in traffic in our $1.6 mill, 253mph capable cars! hehe! :p
