What happened that they wanted to sue? Something about a gate? For the most part, bike paths are unmoving objects. I don't want to presume the injured rider was doing something wrong or unsafe, but it's hard to imagine how an injury can be blamed on a bike path or gate.
I listened to the audio quotes. I'll assume that was creative editing designed to make the pro cyclists sound like idiots. If people sue L.A. because there is sand on the bike path along causing them to fall, it'll be the end of the bike paths in L.A. People need to get over this litigation nonsense.
I know a BF member was injured due to a construction fence falling into the bike path. That was the fault of the construction company, not the city which built the path. What would the scenario be that the city would truly be at fault for an injury on a path?

I can't imagine, Ron, unless the path was so poorly maintained that a cyclist was injured due to absolute neglect (i.e. on SGRT, the path was washed out and the city put no signs up to warn cyclists - then it could be an issue for the city). But, yes, it would be a shame if litigious legal actions brought about the end of bike path maintenance and continuation. I'd love to see the LA River Path run all the way to Griffith Park and through the valley. The city will certainly be reluctant to do so if they fear lawsuits.
