BMX - riding brakeless, not even fixed
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

i saw a guy yesterday riding his bmx bike with no brakes, his bike had a freewheel so the only way he could have stopped would be to like scrape his foot on the ground or drag his foot on the rim
whats the deal with this, it seems awfully ****ing dangerous.

It's actually really common.
You get to be a much better, more flowy rider.

Very common. Brakeless is the best way to run a 20" bike IMO.
Life's dangerous.. You learn how to stop/control your speed pretty easily. I've crashed a few times from riding brakeless, but having the setup that I like so much better is worth it.

I ran brakeless for over a year until I tore my ATL and ACL riding trails brakeless. If I didnt ride trails, my bike would be brakeless.

ok so how does one control one's speed? i mean, come on do you use kenetic energy to slow yourself down?

Either Flinstones style or foot on the back tire.

Plus, BMX bikes don't hold speed as well as bigger bikes. Especially when the hubs/wheels get worn out a little, they don't roll as smoothly or as far.

Just be a man and stop with your foot. Riding trails brakeless is pretty much suicide, though.

You adjust your speed by learning how to approach that obsticle at the proper speed, pumping and not pumping, instead of mashing and hitting your brakes.

It's scary but it makes you go higher and stuff becuase you can't feather your brakes or make too many ***** run ups! I hate it though. It's too scary not being able to stop riding trails or a crowded skatepark.

By "go higher", he means be committed to all of your tricks and actually do them because there is no turning back.
