Framebuilders - first frame project help. (velonomad you out there??)

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

good afternoon eveyone.

Im usually hangin out on the Clyde and commuter forums but Ive got an itch to build me a frame.

Id be looking to build a commute /tour style bike. strong and steady

My commute rig at the moment is a Surly XC That I built up 2 years ago. its a good ride but not quite Right for me with the 700 c wheels and my roman legion type physique

I have fairley short legs 30" / longer torso . im 5' 10" 247 lb.

Im thinking I would like to do a slope tube compact style frame for 650 c with discs perhaps, if not discs Ill use the new long reach double pivot side pulls.

anyway I think it would be a hoot to get a frame just the way I want it.

Brazing /soldering/tig work I can do as well as anyone(did lots in my past employment) . I can get my hands on a Good industrial tig machine if need be as well as a good oxy /acc set up.. also have a big machine shop at my disposal here at work.

Im really at a loss On the design stuff Though IE: mitering the tubes, geometry, layout ...

Reading older Posts Velonomad lives right near me in NY , 20mins. I work with someone who may know him I would love to pick his brain if he'll let me (Please)

So where to start.

1) best way to figure the geometry I need ? would like a real comfy, relaxed ,very steady beast.

with my height /inseam I would like to use 650s or would 26 be better?? my cross check size is a 50.

2) steel for sure , lugged or fillet frame??

3) miter info for tubes (no clue where to start here) patterns avail?? I have plenty of tools.

well this is a start any help will be most welcome.

happy luggin!

Well..........
1) Aside from asking someone to give you their version of what would be best (not always a bad option) you really need to experiment a little: ride a bunch of bikes, pay close attention to how they feel, and of course research what's already out there.
2) Alignment is a bit easier to maintain on you first frame if you go with lugs, otherwise, if you can already braze/weld, is more a matter of what look you want.
3)http://www.ozhpv.org.au/shed/tubemiter.htm this site has an simple program that will print out a pattern for anything you'll need to cope, except for the seatstays.
