I mean, if you use the wrong hand you could like lose control of your bike or brake *wrong* or something like that.

Used to be whichever one was not holding the ciggie. Now I am ambidextrous when it comes to my middle finger. So I favor the one that is closest to the object of my gesture.

This has to be stickyed...

While turning under control: Hand used for front brake operation (of course, location depends on your brake setup).
While stopping straight for a stop sign: Hand used for rear brake operation
While stopped and dismounted, to cross traffic: Your right hand
While stopped and dismounted, to traffic behind and in front of you: Your left hand
To policemen: Disguise as a friendly wave...quickly.
When pulling around someone on the left: Hand used for front brake operation
To someone pulling out of their driveway, ahead of you: Hand used for rear brake operation
To someone pulling out of their driveway behind you: Turn around and mash the door panels in, then give finger with right hand.
To another cyclist behind you: With left hand
To a cyclist on the side of you: With your frame pump shoved into his spokes
To a cyclist ahead of you: Bottle rockets
To a wrong-way cyclist: In his face with both hands - after he hits you
While holding a ciggie in either hand: With the ciggy.
To a hick in an F150: With your Glock
To a hot chick in an SUV: Same as the F150.
To someone in full T-Mobile kit with a matching pink and white Giant TCR Team: Either hand, while yelling "YOU FAG!"
To someone in Discovery/USPS kit: In the shape of a "7"
In all other situations: Oh, just figure it out yourself!

Please define *wrong*, I mean, if the definition you're thinking of is different to the definition I'm thinking of then I may not be responsible for the outcome of this thread! and then I'd have to dynamically reposition my answer laterally while giving the monitor an alpha-dog staredown...

Hate to be a wet blanket, but I don't flip the bird; it shows a lack of class. I yell obscenities and wave my U Lock in a menacing manner instead.

I'm sure everybody is joking when it comes to this subject. I never antogonize drivers like this. I wear a light-hearted message on my jacket, and that's it. Be careful, otherwise you may be looking down the barrel of a gun. There are a lot of firecrackers out there, just waiting to be ignited.

I really try not to ride my bike close to the grill, good way to get burned. I just sit in a patio chair and have a beer. And to answer the question, I open the grill with my right hand and flip with my left hand.

whever hand is holding the cup of coffee, or whichever is closest. its a tossup. deploying the bird is usually pointless, but waving like you know them, and slowing down in front of them, THAT really chaps the JAMs.

Some of us are the firecrackers that people need to look out for.

Just sayin'.

If you ride in the margins then only your left hand will do. If centerish is your default position, then you can use any hand.

Make sure when you are flipping it, you put your cigarette in your mouth first. Makes a better impression.

Well, I think the answer is obvious! Whichever hand you signal with! The official signal hand would be the left hand. In fact you could even combine signals as the official turn and stop signals don't specify what to do with your hand as they are mostly arm signals.

If you use your good hand, you could lose control in an emergency. If you use your weaker hand, the bird might fall.

Flipping parrots is best done at home.

That, right there, is adaptive bird flipping - ABF.

You are not being helpful. There are a lot of wierdos that I'm not interested in. What's his cycling perversion? I gotta admit I have a sneaking suspicion that its got nothing to with safety nor advocacy.:)

No, but he has a lot to do with being 'celebrated' in a very long game of Photoshop Tag in the SS/FG forum.

Being a law abiding cyclist I always "signal" (haha) with the left hand, since according to Illinois state law that's the only the one that can legally be used for this purpose. Thankfully, our legislators are busy passing a new bill in the Senate which will soon clear this up, allowing us to legally signal with the right hand when appropriate. Proof that our legislators really do consider cyclist safety! :p

Edit: Actually, I never flip off motorists because I don't think anything good can come from it.

Being left handed, I find I can't effectively present the bird with my right hand, at least not without any real intent behind it. So for me, the answer is clear. :D

What I'd like to know is if you keep your thumb extended. I usually do a closed fist flip off for most occassions---I I am really p!ssed I throw out the thumb like ---WHAM---

I also like to confuse motorists by flipping them off the way the british used to flip off the french with the
V ( As in OI!, f*** You frenchies, we still have fingers to shoot our longbows) ---this usually makes them too confused to do anything in response

Does that gesture require the use of two fingers and a tongue? Oh you devil!

the answer is neither. u use both hands, while putting the bike on cruise control.
