Water for me. Flat coke works well too.

Nice - I've done similar with great results. Nothing beats real juice! :)

I do the 60% gatorade 40% water mashup.
Whats the benefit of the salt btw?
Infinit or HEED.
+1 on the HEED. I've been using it for a month or so and really like it. Although for crits I'll stick with the pre-race Hammer Gel, only because I need the calories and have a tendency to forget to drink.

Dihydrogen monoxide (http://www.dhmo.org/)
yeah the other day there was this lady at the bagel shop who was complaining about the ingredients in the bagel sandwich she ordered. Apparently the place didn't use fresh eggs, but some kind of egg-liquid stuff
that you can cook in the microwave. Egg beaters I think it's called. Anyhoo, the lady found out that's what it was and wanted her money back because she said eggbeaters have phosphates or some other chemical in them.
I thought about going over and telling her about the dihydrogen monoxide that they used in the bagel processing operations and that a lot of people have died from ingesting too much of this stuff. But then I thought no, she is old and might have a heart attack
Grape juice cocktail from frozen concentrate. It's carb central and there's other stuff like potassium and miscellaneous vitamins and minerals. Top off with a bit of epo.

And I thought oral EPO was still in clinical trials... :)

Whats the benefit of the salt btw? Robert Haas was among the first big hydration zealots way back in the 80s. In his book Eat To Win, he provided this recipe for fluid and sodium replacement.
* 1 cup water
* 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
* 1/3 teaspoon table salt
CHILL
Drink two cups 15 minutes before exercise; 1-2 pints for each hour of strenuous activity.
What I found was that this much salt made it too indigestible for marathon running. You can digest a lot more easily on wheels but I still prefer less salt. I also bumped up the juice after bonking (in the American sense) on this mix -- just not enough carbs -- and reading that carb drinks will improve even one hour cycling times.

You also need potassium. Get some Morton Lite Salt.

Fill the bottle with ice, then one scoop of gatorade power, then fill the rest with water. Here in CA in the Summer, that ice melts in the first 30 min.

Until the weather changed, taking water along on the ride was futile. 30 minutes into my rides the water was frozen. :rolleyes:

That's why you put the salt in. It lowers the freezing point.:D

Hi All-
During hot weather I use large-capacity water bottles. The night before the ride I fill them halfway with water and stick them in the freezer overnight. Before heading out the door, I drop in a few more ice cubes...and then fill the rest with plain water. It keeps the water reasonably cold for a good amount of time, and when everyone else has their head pounding you might be able to stay comfortable a little bit longer.

Good idea. I ride in weather that is hotter than hell most of the year, here are a few of my tricks. Before I fill my bottles I slather on the sunscreen. Seems stupid after I have built up a turtle skin tan in July, but it helps keep my body cooler. Then I typically do one half Gatorade/Half Water mixture, the other plain water. that's it. For me when it is hot, pre-hydration is most important, as well as re-hydration after a ride. It seems after a few days of keeping this in mind, I feel better on the hottest of days.

I use cheap generic orange diet soda diluted 2 or 3 to 1. Just enough taste to make the local water palatable. Cost no object I wold have a bottle of Spiz along for every hour of a long ride.

Only 87 degrees riding in Tucson, AZ today. We drink w-a-t-e-r!
Up to 85deg, I'm good to go with two water bottles for 4 hours. But I go for regular 5/6 hour rides, and I don't get off the bike. In the summer, when it gets in the high nineties and low 100's here in west tx, I fill a 70oz camelbak with ice cubes, then fill with water, then I put in 2 tablespoons of vinegar. You would not believe how refreshing that is. It tastes like cold apple juice. I also put one water bottle on the bike frozen and one unfrozen. I drink from the frozen water bottle the first hour, then the camelbak, and save the unfrozen water bottle for when the camelbak runs out. On a 6 hour ride, I am usually empty when I get home.

the lemon lime is palatable which is more than I can say for most

+1. I forgot to mention the NUUN. I use it on easy/recovery days, especially when I'm trying to drop some weight, because there are no calories.

Do you guys bring along just NUUN, or is it one bottle of NUUN mix and one of water?
FWIW, I like the Gu2o powder mixed with water for regular hot day use. It's got a good punch of sodium, and definitely is not overly sweet. Gatorade was okay for me, Powerade gave me vicious stomach pain. I used the Gu2o mainly because it came out to be cheaper than the bottled electrolyte drinks I could get near me, and because I could bring extra along to mix with water along the way.

Usually diluted Gatorade. 2/3 Gatorade, 1/3 water. I need some sugar for the longer rides and also for those more intense training rides. I can't go on just water alone.
I usually buy the Gatorade powder and put it in my bottles with water. When I'm out of Gatorade I will use diluted orange juice or fruit juice with a little salt thrown in. As long as I've got some sugar in my bottle I'm good to go. I also usually carry a banana or bar of some kind. There is a little country store out on my favorite 30 mile loop. I will often stop there when I run out of fluids and use his water faucet, which is mounted on the wall of his store outside. Sometimes I'll carry a little Gatorade powder in a ziploc baggie. So I can get a gatorade fill-up using his faucet. He also sells Gatorade and bananas inside the store....so I'll often carry some money in my saddle bag. I rarely have to use his faucet except on the longer rides when I may go two trips around the 30 mile loop. There are all sorts of variations in this loop that I can use to make it longer or shorter than 30 miles. 2 bottles are usually sufficient for the 30 mile trip around the loop.
I'm taking a rest day today, which is why I have so much time on my hands to ramble like this. Suppose to be around 75 degrees tomorrow. Can't wait. I'm feeling guilty because I had a bag of cheeze doodles in the car today on the way home from work. Got to kick butt tomorrow out on the route.
