" Full ceramic bearings - balls and races - add $1000 to the price and remove 10 grams from the weight."
Or you could skip eating a piece of toast before racing. :)
I thought the $5000 barrier for wheels had already been broached, or am I wrong?

All that stands between me and dropping a slew of 20 year olds is a set of these wheels!

Funnily enough I went in and ordered a new pair of wheels for the road bike today. I was looking at the Mavic Krysium Elites- but as they would cost more tham 50% of the value of the bike- I think they are a bit over the top.Good wheels and a very good price but don't think i can warrant spending that much. I am going through my LBS and they have an excellent wheel builder- He agreed that I do not need the Krysiums but I was tempted. Then the questions started- How heavy am I?- He knows the bike- What sort of riding? What colour? and how much?
I have no idea what he is going to build me but they are 100grammes heavier than the Krysiums- Have conventional spokes so that If I have a problem on the road- I can retrue and they are within my budget- £140 or $280us. Now if only I can summon up the courage to commit my pension fund for the hotel stay and a test ride- I know that is only $500 but I think i might feel committed to Buying a pair of the "Hot Wheels" after wrecking their bike checking the wheels offroad.

The wife & I will be in Las Vegas in August and a cycle tour company operating out of that resort offers MTB rides through Red Rock Canyon for $ 99 per person all-inclusive door-to-door. Maybe I'll convince her to do that instead of shelling out the same dollars for show tickets! As for testing the $ 5K tires, I'll leave that to others...

I've done that ride.
It will be an absolute killer in August - the heat is, well . . .
You don't need a guide, though.
Pretty country.

I was thinking that the slew of 20 year olds in one of DG's recent posts were sporting components that might have cost them $5,000 per pair.

Don't need a guide, eh? It's advertised as about 2 hours' riding time but that doesn't mean much in terms of who might be riding. Well, we won't have a car to get to the trailhead so unless I can find a friendly, close rental bike store, it may be hard to swing without taking a tour.
I agree that the August heat may put us off of it if we can't get out to the canyon, ride & be off the trail by 10 -11 a.m. But at least it gives me something to look forward to in Vegas...a town that otherwise holds little attraction to me.

The ride up to the canyon (159) is not too bad - it is about 13 miles away from the nearest bike shop (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&latlongtype=findit&address=&city=Las%20Vegas&state=NV&zipcode=&country=US&latitude=%2f0k%2bNo1yvwbfCPOaHmtK%2fQ%3d%3d&longitude=uJrJdWqjaRZQbphEuIQT4w%3d%3d&cat=bicycle%20shops). Mild to moderate uphill grade, as I remember. Then the 13 mile ride in the canyon is a slow (mixed with cars and one-way) curvy up and down. The ride coming down is fun.
We had our bikes in our van, so we drove up to the canyon, and rode from there. Then my wife drove the car down while I rode the bike down to LV.

;) Undoubtedly hand-built by a specialist for speed and high tension, but are they true?

Ah C'woody...don't worry about it.....its a DRY HEAT !!!!
If we could persuade Jet Travis to buy a set of these wheels he could show them to his wife when he shows her his freshly shaven legs. :D

He had better first install them on his bike, to enable him to make a fast getaway when he shares the price with her.
Might as well tell her why he shaved his legs too. Get it all over at once.

Yea that is why the signs at Valley of Fire State Park, NV warn that if you hike there in the summer YOU WILL DIE.

I haven't forgotten. I'm gonna do it one time--during shorts weather--and write a full report. I have a feeling it's gonna go like this:
Nobody noticed, but, I had to get a tetanus shot, and my legs itched for two weeks.

You do realize you'll need a special shaver for this operation:rolleyes:
Your legs WILL itch. Especially under long pants when the hairs start growing out. They'll drive you crazy....maybe even enough to shave them again just to get the itching to cease:D

Wheels, schmeels. This is a little over $5000 for the whole bike. I've seen this guy destroy 30 mph pacelines. He used to be so mild-mannered before he got it, too...

I used to live in Vegas and rode out to Red Rock regularly. In summer months I wanted to be back home by 9AM. August is the worst month, many times the nighttime LOW temp would be 90 degrees. And the humidity is not as low as it used to be when we lived there.

Sometimes when a youngster pulls in behind me on a $2500 bike its fun to be faster. Its not always possible but when it is its definately fun.
