I have completed one dive in the north end of Lake Michigan and one in Georgian bay. Both trips, mostly old wood scooners. Pretty neat I thought. Your impressions. Favorite dive spots. How was the dive? Any special needs for Great Lakes Dives. The two dives I completed that summer was hotter than hades. The water was especially warm. Doubt that is normal.

I'd like to dive on the Edmund Fitzgerald, but it's too deep for the type of equipment I have available!:eek:

the viz i expereiced at Georgian Bay and off of Beaver Island, MI was really quite good. Probably like 50 feet that day. And you do not give a second thought to shark.

On February 1, 1957, the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, Milwaukee, entered into a contract with Great Lakes Engineering works for the construction of the first "maximum sized" Laker ever built. The builder laid the keel of Hull 301 at its yard at Ecorse, Michigan, on August 7, 1957, and the vessel was launched on June 7, 1958. On September 22, 1958, EDMUND FITZGERALD was delivered to her owner. Boy, are you the dork or what? Tell that to the families that lost their family members. You can find most of the surviving families in Toledo, Ohio.

The Edmund Fitzgerald is 535 feet deep and is actually ILLEGAL to dive. It is in Canadian waters. What do you want to know? There are plenty of documented dive videos out there. PM me for more info.

Legal issues aside, the logistics alone make it an incredibly expensive dive or a risky dive depending on how you go about it.

That said, if I ever did dive the Fitz, I would only get images and wouldn't disturb anything.

Rumor has it that there have been a dozen or so unauthorized dives over the years. I may even know a diver or two that have seen the Fitz. All using deep diving gas mixes and HUGE tanks. (2 X 130 cuft tanks @ 3400 psi - staging tanks as well) I believe that the Canadian government now has the Fitz and even the surrounding water equiped with electronic monitoring devices so they can catch anybody trying to dive on her.
It does sound like a fun dive though, doesn't it?:D I've been down as deep as 350 feet, and have my advanced open water license. If I ever feel like taking the risk of getting caught, you in?;) Like I said, it's going to be for pics only and one shot set in particular.....the replacement bell with individuals visible behind the bell to prove we were there!;)

I know one thing for sure though, I'd want a good topside crew!:D

Lancer. That would be cool. Not sure my wetsuit is Great Lakes standards. Never bought a dry suit. Mostly, I've lived where palm trees prevail.
Did a wreck dive on a scooner off of TObermory and a wreck dive off of Manitou Island. Both in August and viz was great.
Am in Mich now for couple weeks and for now missing my bikes. Not into ice diving as would appear to be the case for now, looking out the airplane window two days ago.
Anyone into listing favorite Great Lakes dives? +1 for dive web sites.

I was interested until I realized "Great Lakes Diver" wasn't a euphemism. :)
